The University of California, Berkeley canceled a talk by Milo Yiannopoulos, the editor of Breitbart News, amid protests by thousands of students Wednesday night.
The largely peaceful protest was accompanied by a section of anarchists who ignited a gas lamp, starting a blaze, threw fireworks at police and event organizers, and physically assaulted Trump supporters. Berkeley Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and noise grenades at the crowd. Berkeley Police also declared a lock-down of campus, telling students to leave campus, as they brought in larger detachments of riot-squads from outside police agencies to crack down on protesters.
Wednesday night’s event was the final stop in a nation-wide college campus speaking tour for Yiannopoulos. Yiannopoulos is an extreme right-wing provocateur who presents the “Christian world” in a struggle for power against Islam. The 32-year old gay man titled his tour “The Dangerous Faggot.”
Stephen Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist and a major figure in his administration, was formally the head of Breitbart News, which has ties to fascistic and white nationalist organizations.
At multiple other campuses, including UC Davis and UCLA, Yiannopoulos’s events were canceled. On Tuesday night he spoke at California Polytechnic University. His speech was largely a diatribe against abortion rights. He appealed to “Western Civilization” to end abortion and attacked Muslim immigrants. “Islam is always wrong,” he told the crowd.
At one of Yiannopoulos’ speeches at the University of Washington on January 20, a protester was shot and seriously injured, apparently by a Trump supporter.
He told the BBC in an interview earlier this year that his alt-right supporters were motivated by hostility to political correctness. Yiannopoulos laces his attack on “offense-taking and grievance-holding culture” with xenophobia, racism and right-wing nationalism. In one speech, he said, Muslim immigrants “were going to bring their delicacies with them: pork chops, yoghurt, and gang-rape.” He has repeatedly advocated banning Muslims from entering the United States and Europe. He stresses that “Islam, not radical Islam, is the problem.”
Such comments are in line with the early policies of the Trump administration, including the ban on refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly-Muslim countries announced last weekend.
Wednesday night’s scheduled event at UC Berkeley was hosted by the UC Berkeley college Republican club, a registered student organization on campus, and was not directly sponsored by the university. Leading up to the event, students expressed opposition to Yiannopoulos and his political views. Hundreds of teachers and faculty signed a letter asking the university to shut down the event.
Several Trump supporters in attendance at the protest and the event were maced or assaulted, including a young woman who was being interviewed on ABC News. At one point a car sped through a crowd of protesters with one masked protester banging on its windshield. Later a man was mistaken for the driver and pepper-sprayed by a member of the crowd. Shop windows, cars and ATMs were bashed in the city. A Starbucks near campus was also looted. A loosely organized coalition calling itself ANTIFA, standing for anti-fascist, has been blamed for much of the violence.
Black blocs are notorious for having infiltrators from the police departments. This occurred in Oakland during the Occupy movement in 2011 and 2012.

Actually NA, I wouldn't describe them as exactly true Anarchist. Anarchist are against any government, like in Greece remember, these protesters are actually far left and into big government.. just pissed and acting like spoiled babies, but why burn down your city and school?. I cherish my neighborhood and University I went to, I would never go and try to vandalize it, because I didn't get my way. I just don't understand the violence and destruction of their own surroundings!
I didn't agree with the Obama admin, for the last 8 years, but I never once acted out in violence. I knew we would get through it victorious.

Didn't they make a movie about that? If I am not mistaking, or maybe I am, but wasn't some of the principles off Ayn Rand's Philosophy? Ayn Rand had some good points, she was a big supporter, especially in laissez-faire capitalism. I enjoyed Atlas Shrugged. I think they're similar... very, very little government, but NA Principle was for No government right?

Here we go again with the “infiltrated by vandals” line. How many times have we heard this one before? Oh, the peaceful protesters just wanted to have their voices heard but these nasty outsiders came along and ruined things. Really? Go take a look at the CBS video again. That looks like some awfully coordinated, well prepared violence, arson and looting. And I don’t see any of the marchers doing a thing to eject or even criticize the masked criminals engaging in all the carnage.
And what did they get away with?
By 8 p.m., a large crowd of people had moved off the campus and onto Telegraph Avenue. They smashed ATMs at a Bank of America branch and set several trash fires on Telegraph Avenue.
After marching west on Durant Avenue, the group moved north on Shattuck Avenue, smashing windows and vandalizing a Mechanics Bank branch near the corner of Bancroft Way.
Chase and Wells Fargo branches were also vandalized. A Starbucks location near campus was vandalized and looted.
Police also received reports that banks were set on fire in the area of Center Street and Shattuck Avenue.
Multiple banks robbed and burned. Starbucks looted. That should really teach Milo a thing or two. So what sort of “speech” did that represent? Is this some sort of performance art I’m too tragically un-hip to know about?
But all of the violence doesn’t cover up the sins of the rest of the crowd, even if some of them were not engaged in liberating cash and other private property. This wasn’t a protest designed to get out an opposing view or sway the public. This was not free speech. Just take a look at the public notices displayed around the area.
Shut. Him. Down.
Don’t let him speak. He has “no right” to speak here or anywhere. This was going on long before Trump took office, so that’s not the excuse. It’s just the modern Left in action. If they can’t win at the ballot box, the next step is to burn the place down and attempt to intimidate everyone until they get their way. Welcome to the modern era of civil discourse.

Should workers (i.e., left-wing) deal with their capitalist (i.e., right-wing) enemies the same way that capitalists deal with their enemies?
When capitalists have a problem with others getting in the way of their financial pursuits, they resort to "giving war a chance," bombing, killing, torture, sniper attacks, drone attacks, police attacks, and "nuking 'em all and letting God sort it out." I mean, that strategy seems to have worked pretty well for capitalists over the years. It's been a strategy of murder, violence and repression that every right-winger loves and embraces.
Forget MLK! Forget Gandhi! F**k peace! F**k protests! Where has any of that worked in the past 50 f**king years? No, no! We know what works. We've witnessed it for many years now from America's extremely-successful, capitalist ruling-class. What works is lots and lots of violence! What works is mass destruction of property. Following the violent anti-free-speech protests in Berkeley, California last night - sparked by cal's special snowflakes hurt feelings at the potential words that would come out of Milo Yiannopoulos' mouth during a sold-out event - it appears America's curiousity has been piqued.
Sales of Milo's book have increased 12,740% overnight sending it rocketing from 642nd to 5th ranked best-seller on Amazon. Pretty impressive considering the book is not even released until March 14th 2017.

Why is the New York Times promoting the “black bloc”?

The New York Times, the semi-official voice of the Democratic Party establishment, published an extraordinary article in its Friday edition headlined “Anarchists Vow to Halt Far Right’s Rise, With Violence if Needed.”
The piece, which ran across four columns of the newspaper’s front page under a huge photo of a black-masked individual preparing to break an office building window with an iron bar during Wednesday night’s protests at the University of California, Berkeley, amounted to free publicity and promotion of the violent protests organized by elements identifying themselves as the “black bloc,” anti-fascists and anarchists.
Authored by Times reporter Farah Stockman, the article consists not only of breathless accounts of gratuitous acts of violence by these elements and extended quotes from individuals claiming to represent their politics, but also multiple links to anarchist and black bloc websites and twitter feeds, helpfully provided for any reader who might want to get involved.
“With far-right groups edging into the mainstream with the rise of Donald Trump, self-described anti-fascists and anarchists are vowing to confront them at every turn, and by any means necessary—including violence,” Stockman writes.
“Anarchists also say their recent efforts have been wildly successful, both by focusing attention on their most urgent argument—that Mr. Trump poses a fascist threat—and by enticing others to join their movement,” the article continues. It is clear that she and the Times decided to lend a hand to this “enticement.”
The article ran just two days after the protest in Berkeley over a scheduled speaking appearance there by Milo Yiannopoulos, the extreme right-wing editor of Breitbart News, whose former boss, the fascistic Stephen Bannon, has become Trump’s chief White House strategist.
While thousands of Berkley students turned out to protest peacefully against Yiannopoulos, a reactionary provocateur who laces his speeches with Islamophobia, racism and right-wing nationalism, a minority of about 150 black-masked demonstrators organized under an amorphous coalition describing itself as ANTIFA, standing for anti-fascist, marched onto the campus and carried out acts of gratuitous violence that an overwhelming majority of the students at the protest opposed.
The ANTIFA contingent smashed windows, set fires, shot fireworks at police, assaulted the few Trump supporters in the area and vandalized local stores, buildings and ATMs.
The intervention by these hooded vandals managed to turn a mass protest into a police provocation.
These actions were precisely what Yiannopoulos and his supporters desired, allowing them to drape their virulent anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant racism in the mantle of “free speech.” Trump responded with a threat to cut off federal funding to UC Berkley, and the turmoil was seized upon by various politicians as a pretext for promoting laws to suppress genuine protests and strikes.
There has been a long experience with the violence of the so-called “black bloc,” anarchist and ANTIFA protesters, not only in the United States, but in Europe and around the world. The politics of these movements are thoroughly reactionary, based upon a visceral hostility to any struggle to mobilize the working class and youth in an independent political struggle against the capitalist system and for socialism. They attract demoralized and disoriented elements from the middle class, along with a sizable number of police provocateurs who hide behind hoods and masks and egg on the violence to provide an excuse for repression.
For obvious reasons, as at Wednesday night’s protest in Berkeley, these forces are often given a free hand to carry out provocations that are then exploited by the police. The challenge confronting those seeking to carry out genuine political actions in opposition to the government and the capitalist system it defends is to identify these provocateurs before they can do their dirty work and throw them out.
The Times, however, seems determined to see them get in. The article includes the following: “The question now is whether anarchists' efforts against Mr. Trump—whether merely colorful and spirited, or lawless and potentially lethal—will earn their fringe movement a bigger presence in the battle of ideas in years to come.”
No, the real question is, why is the Times promoting this “fringe movement” as some kind of serious contender in the “battle of ideas”?
The article, like much of that which appears in the news pages of the New York Times, stinks of a filthy political provocation.
The Times’ aim in promoting such retrograde tendencies as the “black bloc” and self-styled anarchists is to help divert the growing popular radicalization in response to the most right-wing government in US history into safe political channels.
Whatever the cost in broken windows, damaged ATMs and looted Starbucks’ coffee shops, these forces are fully subordinated to the Democratic Party and the capitalist system, while serving as a useful tool for the police in repressing mass unrest.
This explains how a newspaper that endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, has supported every imperialist war waged by Washington and has waged a neo-McCarthyite campaign in support of confrontation with Russia has become an enthusiastic patron of anarchism.
