Well, thanks to a certain neighbor I've got to do a little cleaning of the yard and bull-pen due to the Townships orders.
Having said that, I have probably about 10 tons of ferrous scrap metal and maybe about 500 lbs of non-ferrous metal that I have been saving until the price of scrap goes back up.. Obviously the bottom dropped out on the price of scrap after Obama got in office and subsidized China's metal needs with American tax payer dollars via the "cash for clunkers" program in 2009, whereas we the tax payers paid $4500 per clunker with absolutely no ROI. Said steel was all sold to China for pennies, by the scrap yards who didn't have to pay a dime for the cars and then China processed it and sold it back to us at cost so low it crippled our steel industry. Yes, this it typical Democrat waste.
Anyway, back in 2005-2008 scrap iron was fetching almost $300 per ton with aluminum and copper getting almost up to $1.00 or even more depending on how pure it was. After the Cash for Clunkers program you were lucky to see a little over $100 a ton for scrap iron/steel. non-ferrous metals stayed somewhat steady but still took a little hit, probably because there is less non-ferrous metal in a vehicle than steel and iron.
My question, to all you stock market speculators is when do you think the value of such scrap will increase? Will it take a war to get the price of iron and steel back up to $300 per ton?

Well, in my line of work you can either throw it out or put it to the side.
Did I mention I am a tight wad penny pincher?
Just trying to figure out if I should hold onto it longer or take it in now. If I hold onto it longer I have an area that I collect this stuff where it's all fenced off, but it's getting full. Sometimes I get entire vehicles when they come in and are beyond repair as the customer doesn't want to even deal with it anymore. Obviously I cut the catalytic converters right away as they always pull down almost $100 a crack, same goes for the aluminum wheels - they fetch some pretty good money too.
Think I have a few hundred rotors, engine blocks, axles, you name it. I could throw it away but what f00l would throw away money? Do you throw away money Bobby?

The price of printed circuit boards isn't worth the hassle.

Yeah, I always sh*t can the catalytic converters too. Put em back when it's time for inspection, then take them off once the new sticker goes on.

Yes 4uijack, but any predictions on how high? I'd hate to get rid of it now and it double in a few months.
I'd like it all gone by spring, but I'd do the work to fit more in the bull pen if I thought that was the case.

Yeah but that's a completely different angle... Performance and sound isn't my objective, dollars and cents is!
We don't have emissions testing here in Michigan, but on luxury cars I leave them on so they don't stink when sitting in traffic idling. Performance cars, well that's a different story! But only for off road use!
Convertibles are also something where you want to keep them on too, as the gasses really do take their toll in traffic.

The fluctuation of scrap prices,
runs parallel to oil prices.
When oil prices climb, so do scrap prices.

It's like this Yamaha moped I have. A little wire controls the governor and keeps the speed at 30 mph. Snip the wire and she'll do 48mph. I get a new wire and put that on when it's time for inspection.

Speaking of aluminum I took my recyclable cans in and was sort of amazed that the price had jumped to .50 cents a pound from .30 cents. That may not sound like much but it is almost double in 2 months. I guess Trump is good for the Aluminum scrap business too!
Hey Bobby what is the percentage it is up. I know it beat gold and silver in two months.
off the top of my head I would say 2/3 or 66.6%. Quite a rise!
I wish I could have got the rubber off those two Clown car wheels I found.

It runs closer to precious metals everywhere I go.
I'd pile it up for a little longer then take what I get and start a new pile.

It's also worth noting that old 186, 286, 386 and 486 processors contain a fair amount of gold in them. The pins back then were made out of gold, obviously because gold is a great conductor and it does not rust - this is important when it comes to processors.
I don't get a lot of old computers anymore but back in the day I had a whole lot of them that people gave me, I did pretty good selling all the old processors for scrap to people who extracted the gold when gold prices were up there.
If you got a bunch of old computers laying around these are the chips with the highest concentration of gold in them, so it would be worth it to pull the processors out of them before you toss them as they are easy to store.

I think we are headed towards an inflationary period where everything is on the verge to go up.
Give it another 6 months and it'll surely be worth something by then.

Yep.. That is exactly what I was thinking!
Guess I'll have to put the kids to work and Tetris the metal in the bull-pen! It's more work, but hey.. Twice as much is twice as much!

My son is in the scrap metal business in a way. He specializes in electronics though!
I know, not much of a career for an Electronic Engineering Degree!
But, that is his choice.
The price drops over the last several years have hurt him bigtime or bigly, or big league.

Iron is about 5.00 a hundred pounds..The majority of scrap is called shred, its mostly metal with plastic and other metals..Like a lawnmower or refrigerator, thats about 3.50 per hundred.
