The way he had such energy in his 60's and 70's, I thought he'd live to be over 100.

Him and that era gave us the start to all the rock music we've enjoyed over the decades.

If you'll don't mind, I'd like to say a few other things about him, and the 50's era.

Chuck Berry and little Richard, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis and maybe a couple of others were the innovators of something else too, that disappeared for a while and re surfaced around the later 60's into the seventies.

Which is, the wild stage act to go along with the music, maybe not wild by early seventies standards, but for the era, and it had never really done been before...society wouldn't have allowed it. Which disappeared after those early guys, thru the early and mid 60's and resurfaced with the likes of the later version of the Who, Alice Cooper, Hendrix at Monterrey...and etc.

People think of the 60's as the first real revolutionary years, but mainstream society nearly was successful at snuffing out Rock and Roll thru the 50's and those wild acts I'm sure added to the mix of the dislike of the older generations, The teens who dared had their look and dress that shook up society too, but not as bad as the hippy era, but still.

The 50's was likely the first era of teens, that had that much time on their hands too, prior to that, most were raised on family farms, where you worked 10 hours a day 7 days a week, then you had ww11.

Back to Chuck, the other thing about him, is that he was very smart and intelligent person, I've seen films of not just his music, but where he talked about his life and etc...the dude was smart as hell..

The only thing that bothered me was when he sued the Beach Boys for using his song, "Sweet Little 16" ..to compose the music for the Beach Boys.."Surfin U.S.A."....because with many early rock and doo wop songs...the basic music compositions were basically the same things with a lot of the songs.

Bee you left out The Ramones. They resurrected that sound in the late 70s. I'm sure one day we will see the younger generations embracing this timeless sound. Everything goes in cycles.

RIP Chuck

Yes, the Ramones and there was a group in the 60's known for their throw back sound of the doo wop of the 50s, then I think it was the 70's when Sha Na Na came out with that guy Bowser as the base singer and they did the whole 50's act, with the look and dress too, then the Stray Cats during the punk rock times.

But I was referring to just the acts in the 50's that put on for the time a "wild" stage act along with just singing, and how that went away until the Who, and several from the late 60's and early 70's picked up on that and incorporated it into their performances.

He said in his youth he was influenced by Louis Jordan, a 1940s swing artist. And later by T-Bone Walker and his guitar riffs and showmanship. In 1955 he met Muddy Waters in Chicago who suggested he get in contact with Leonard Chess, of Chess Records. Where he recorded Maybellene. The rest is history.

RIP Chuck. Long live Rock and Roll!!!

I just thought of another innovation of his.

If this song came out in the 50's. I don't know if it did, because I never heard it, until his later performances in 70's and 80's

But its...Reeling and Rocking(till the break of dawn)

It was pretty sexually graphic, and if it was the 50's then that's why I likely never heard it when I was a kid, because it was likely banned from being played on a lot of stations...lol

When I was a little biddy boy
My grandma bought me a cute little toy
Two Silver bells on a string
She told me it was my ding-a-ling-a-ling

My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling won't you play with My Ding-A-Ling
My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling won't you play with My Ding-A-Ling

When I was little boy In Grammar school
Always went by the very best rule
But Evertime the bell would ring
You'd catch me playing with my ding-a-ling

Once while climbing the garden wall,
Slipped and fell had a very bad fall
I fell so hard I heard birds sing,
But I held on to My ding-a-ling

Once while swimming cross turtle creek
Man them snappers right at my feet
Sure was hard swimming cross that thing
with both hands holding my dingaling

Now this here song it ain't so bad
Prettiest little song that you ever had
And those of you who will not sing
must be playing with your on Ding-a-ling

Rest in Peace
