DEA OKs synthetic marijuana for pharma company that spent $500,000 to keep pot illegal
Insys Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company that was one of the chief financial backers of the opposition to marijuana legalization in Arizona last year, received preliminary approval from the Drug Enforcement Administration this week for Syndros, a synthetic marijuana drug.
Insys gave $500,000 last summer to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, the group opposing marijuana legalization in Arizona. The donation amounted to roughly 10 percent of all money raised by the group in an ultimately successful campaign against legalization. Insys was the only pharmaceutical company known to be giving money to oppose legalization last year, according to a Washington Post analysis of campaign finance records.
Syndros is a synthetic formulation of THC, the main psychoactive component in the cannabis plant. It was approved by the FDA last summer to treat nausea, vomiting and weight loss in cancer and AIDS patients. The DEA approval places Syndros and its generic formulations in Schedule II of the Controlled Substances Act, indicating a "high potential for abuse." Other Schedule II drugs include cocaine, morphine and many prescription painkillers.
Whole-plant marijuana remains in Schedule I of the CSA, an even stricter regulatory category that designates a lack of medically accepted use in addition to a high abuse potential.
Insys has been active in marijuana policy for several years. In 2011 it wrote to the DEA to express opposition to loosening restrictions on naturally derived THC, citing "the abuse potential in terms of the need to grow and cultivate substantial crops of marijuana in the United States."
Last year it petitioned the DEA to loosen restrictions on synthetic versions of CBD, another compound in the cannabis plant. The company is currently developing a CBD-based drug to treat pediatric epilepsy.
"It appears they are trying to kill a non-pharmaceutical market for marijuana in order to line their own pockets," a spokesman for Arizona's marijuana legalization campaign said of Insys last year.
The company last year said that it opposed the marijuana legalization measure because "it fails to protect the safety of Arizona's citizens, and particularly its children." But it added that it "firmly believes in the potential clinical benefits of cannabinoids," and that "we hope that patients will have the opportunity to benefit from these potential products once clinical trials demonstrate their safe and effective use."
Insys is also the subject of numerous state and federal criminal investigations, as well as a shareholder lawsuit, over its aggressive marketing of a product containing the potent and deadly opioid painkiller fentanyl. In December, the FBI arrested the company's former chief executive and five other executives on charges that they "paid kickbacks and committed fraud to sell a highly potent and addictive opioid that can lead to abuse and life threatening respiratory depression."
In addition to its synthetic marijuana products, Insys is also developing a drug to treat opioid overdose.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

There are a lot of stories of cancer coincidentally being cure after the patients started using marijuana as a treatment. Any sane person start to question all those coincidences as maybe being more than just coincidence.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I just can't go that far though...Yes it helps with pain, appetite even seizures. And yes there are several "stories" like this, but still.
I believe that it is understudied and could hold more benefits then even thought, but curing cancer....I just can't get there.
It's possible though. My belief is that, like every pot has a lid, every disease has a cure and it is NOT man made.

I believe that it is understudied and could hold more benefits then even thought, but curing cancer....I just can't get there.
It's possible though. My belief is that, like every pot has a lid, every disease has a cure and it is NOT man made.
Just remember, not only are there stories like these, but both THC and CBD have killed cancer cells in the lab and this is even acknowledged by the federal government. So just knowing that the compounds in marijuana have been shown to kill cancer cells in the lab, and to hear stories like these way too often...... well.... I suppose it's possible it's just a giant coincidence in every case around the world, but I just think it's far more likely that the reason the cancer was cured was the compounds that have killed cancer cells in the lab.
I've done quite a bit of research on the topic, about a half hour a day, every day, for the past 6 or 7 years. I'd be willing to put all the money on the world that the compounds in marijuana can cure almost every type of cancer is used properly.

Even better is don't get a disease in the first place. Think about it, many diseases come about because of our behavior. Cancer, Aids and cirrosis of the liver(sp?) are mostly preventable.
Get the FDA approved chemicals out of our food, flouride out of our water etc...
Change your lifestyle, eat healthy and exercise and chances are you live a long life.
Laugh and cuss me all you want I don't give one f**k, it's true.

Several years back (10 maybe) my friend had "synthetic" marijuana. I smoked about 3-4 hits.
The next day I couldn't swallow. Not water not even saliva.
It was worse pain than the worst strep throat I've ever had & that went on for 4-5 days.
Never again would I do that!!!
The pharma companies always take something completely natural & safe & turn it into something evil so they can make the price skyrocket.
I'm not at all surprised about the "bribe".

RIGHT!!! It's important to not get sick especially now that we see how hard trump plans on f**king us with health insurance!
But how do you plan on getting the chemicals out of the water and food. trump has signed EOs to let big coal companies just dump shit in to the water. In addition to that, he's gutting EPA, FDA and all kinds of other agencies.

I understand and agree! It MUST be taken off the schedule 1 listing in order for it to be studied more thoroughly. As a schedule 1, legally it can't be.
I know that CBDs do a number on seizures, immediately.

The FDA doesn't put or mandate any chemicals be put in food. Manufacturers do- take it up with them.
And they certainly don't mandate putting flouride in water- Your County decides that! You don't want flouride in your water- buy a f**king filter!
Quit blaming the FDA for your little tight-fisted tantrums!
