First consideration is who gave you the $100. Do they have a hidden agenda? That is do they want you to spend it a certain way?
Assuming that the acceptance of the $100 doesn't have any strings attached, you must do an analysis of the recipient of the gift. It's generally a bad idea to buy very personal items like perfume, Jockey shorts, magazines, or such:

Their likes would be a good indicator for me. You can't get more bang for your buck if you look hard enough. Gift card isn't the way to go I think?? Shows they were not worth the time or effort. A little time given to find the perfect gift is way more appreciated, makes it more special too.

A gift card or cash is what a moron would give. It an easy thing to do and doesn't involve any sort of thinking about the person who is going to receive the gift. This is what a lazy disinterested person would do. In short, it demonstrates a total lack of caring about the person receiving the gift.
A gift from a thoughtful person who would take the time to carefully pick a simple card with an appropriate message would be more appreciated.
