It's funny how "throwing money" at the military, and at capitalists for bailouts, and at corporate subsidies, and at building beautiful new stadiums for capitalists, and dishing tax cuts to capitalists all works fabulously well. In fact nobody derisively refers to any of that as "throwing money at."

It might not be that the schools need more money, but rather that the parents do. Perhaps we need to "throw more money at" working-class people. Children who live in poverty do much worse in school. Personal anecdotes never tell the complete story, but I do have one that is quite relevant.

I was one of the two best athletes in my grade school. I was one of the two best at basketball, football, kickball, baseball, and running. Sometimes I was the fastest runner and sometimes my friend Jerry won. Anytime captains chose teams, two of those captains were going to be Jerry and me. He was always completely in charge of his team. He told the players what to do and organized any strategies. He was a very smart athlete. He and I played ball together all the way through high school. He was also in many of my classes over the years. We always tried to sit next to each other whenever possible. He was hilariously funny. He was my twin in every aspect except grades. I was a very good student and he barely scraped by. The only way to explain why a smart, funny, high-quality athlete didn't get very good grades is that his home was a shack in a bad neighborhood while I lived in a big, two-story house in a very nice neighborhood. I simply hit it lucky while he was dealt a bad hand.
