Carlos “White Feather” Hathc*ck, legendary soldier and American hero.
As Memorial day approaches and we honor our veterans who have given up their lives for us, we look back at one of our American heroes, the legendary sniper Carlos Hathc*ck. Carlos served in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam war, the details of his missions were often considered astonishing. In addition, his accuracy was impressive, he had confirmed kill count of 93 and estimated actual kill count ranging between 300 to 400.

Hathc*ck served two tours in Vietnam and is considered one of the best snipers in American military history. In recognition of his service and valor, there was a rifle named after him, the Springfield Armory M25 White Feather. It’s named white feather because Hathc*ck was known for always having a white feather in his cap and that was his nickname.

Similar to many war heroes, Hathc*ck taught himself to shoot at a young age. He grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas and his parents divorced when he was young. He then lived with his grandmother and took up hunting out of necessity to feed his family.

Hathc*ck’s father had also served in the military, fighting in World War I. Hathc*ck developed an affinity for the military early on by using his father’s Mauser that he had brought home from the war. Hathc*ck dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps and enlisting in the armed forces his whole life. When he was 17 he did so by enlisting in the Marines. By the age of 23, he had won the prestigious Wimbledon Cup shooting championship at Camp Perry in 1965.

Hathc*ck started his deployment in Vietnam as a military policeman. Captain Edward James Land pushed for Marines to be placed into every platoon and Land recruited those who had set records in sharpshooting specifically. Hathc*ck had done so when he won the Wimbledon Cup, as such, Land recruited him and set the wheels of history into motion.

Hathc*ck had developed a unique strategy to help find unaware targets, he would strike at the start and end of the day. As Hathc*ck would say “In the morning, they’re going out after a good night’s rest, smoking, laughing. When they come back in the evenings, they’re tired, lollygagging, not paying attention to detail.”

One of his most famous encounters came when he was sent to take out a general of the North Vietnam Army. In an astonishing feat by Hathc*ck, he went four days and three nights without food or sleep pursuing his target. He got 700 yards away and calmly slotted a bullet through the general’s heart, he then spent three days on his way back but managed to do so without being detected once. Hathc*ck would crawl inch by inch in order to get to a good position without being spotted, sometimes even worming on his side in order to keep his trail thin if needed to avoid being spotted by communist forces.

When speaking of Hathc*ck’s technique Captain Land said “Carlos became part of the environment, he totally integrated himself into the environment. He had the patience, drive, and courage to do the job. He felt very strongly that he was saving Marine’s lives.”

Hathc*ck became known for volunteering for missions without knowing anything about them, he held a belief that he could accomplish any mission because he was the best.

Eventually, the North Vietnam Army decided to try and get rid of Hathc*ck. They sent their best man who was known by the code-name Cobra after him. Cobra began by picking off soft targets from Hathc*ck’s unit in an attempt to draw him into the open.

Later when speaking of this event, Hathc*ck said “He was very cagey, very smart, he was close to being as good as I was… But no way, ain’t no way ain’t nobody that good.”

Hathc*ck and Cobra circled each other, Cobra eventually got a shot off but it hit Hathc*ck’s partner’s canteen. Cobra ended up facing the sun and a ray of sun caught the lens of his scope which caused a glint. Hathc*ck saw the glint and shot at it, the bullet went straight through the scope without touching the sides and hit Cobra directly in the eye.

The only way that such an event could have been possible was if Cobra was aiming directly on Hathc*ck. Hathc*ck had the quicker trigger finger and Cobra was dead.

Hathc*ck’s tour in Vietnam was brought to an end when his vehicle hit an anti-tank mine and blew up. However, he managed to save the lives of seven Marines who were inside the burning vehicle but suffered burns to nearly half of his body in the process.

This ended his career as a sniper but he went on to help train the next generation by setting up the Marine Sniper School at Quantico. Eventually, he was forced into retirement after his health worsened due to multiple sclerosis. The disease eventually claimed his life and he passed away in February 1999 in Virginia Beach.

I am good friends with at least 3 Vietnam vets........we all share a common bond, we all do business together

none of us own guns and we all "respect' others right to bare arms, they all say too many idiots own guns and they need to EARN the right to have a firearm..........

odd part is all their sons own guns and for some reason these sons all wave the American flag around as if their gun ownership means more to America than their fathers service has.

I thought this thread was going to be about the sadistically effective female VC sniper ace known as "Apache"

Incidentally the only person he claimed he enjoyed killing.

Met him at the Marine Corps Ball in Quantico....a humble and soft spoken man.

He held the record quite some time. Taking out VC from a fire base 1 1/2 miles away single tapping a 50 cal BMG M2 heavy barrel. You'll love his book.

There were some Russian women snipers, near 400 confirmed kills. I liked "Enemy at the Gates" too, good movie. Ed Harris a German Sniper came to take Vasilly out, he didn't.
