Members of the Texas Major Cities Chiefs, consisting of the police chiefs in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, Fort Worth and San Antonio, and the Texas Police Chiefs Association respectfully oppose Senate Bill 4, the so-called sanctuary cities bill. As amended by the Texas House, the bill would allow local law enforcement officers to ask people about their immigration status during an arrest or a lawful detention, potentially putting local officers in the position of handling federal immigration issues.

Immigration enforcement is a federal obligation. While the federal government has not been able or willing to address this issue, any effort by the state of Texas to address immigration reform will be ineffective.

SB 4 is not the answer to immigration reform; rather it is political pandering that will make our communities more dangerous. If the Texas Legislature were serious about removing undocumented persons, there are better ways to address this issue than forcing law enforcement to become immigration agents.

The Legislature could easily start by addressing the businesses that hire undocumented workers, which is why the majority of the honest hard working persons immigrate to this country with or without documentation. Addressing the primary reason undocumented persons enter this state would free law enforcement to address those people who are committing crimes.

Here for you idiots, I'll try and dumb this down for you so that you can understand what the bill is all about. I should probably write a book, "Texas Law For Idiots"!

But The Sanctuary City Bill would force Police Departments across the state to perform Racial Profiling in traffic stops, and holding Police Officers responsible to force the occupants of Automobiles to show proof of Legal Status or be arrested on the spot, or face legal consequences for non-action themselves.

First of all, Police Departments do not have jail space to hold illegal aliens, and since many of those who would be arrested would be youths, the Texas Jail system is not equipped to be Day Care Centers either.

And many legal citizens do not carry information to substantiate their legal status, so many people would be arrested for no reason other than being arrested for not being able to show proof, and many false arrest claims would be filed in their defense bankrupting Police Departments across the state.

No! Texas does not want a "Gustapo Police State" nor the brutal methods of such arrests.

Brutal laws like this creates more crime, because real crimes would go on unreported, as illegal immigrants would fear being arrested for just reporting a crime or cooperating with the Police Departments investigations of crimes.

Looks like Texas has got it figured out. Illegals are already flooding the interstates heading out.. That should relieve the over crowded jails, hospitals, social service expenditures..

Everyone should have a form of ID.. Anyone upset about having to have one has something to hide.

You make some pretty solid points, fish. And, I would agree with you further, about going after the businesses that are using illegals instead of hiring American workers. Maybe the people(or more need to get involved)living in these sanctuary cities need to write their constituents in order to get get a SB or HB proposed.

Are you aware the Mexicans ARE NOT the only illegals in USA? Sure, they are the closest but there are undocumented people from all over the world. Be aware.
