Not to change your theme but if its ok with the OP I'd like to say, Cows are cool.
They are loving animals and very excellent moms. for the milk producing cows their babies are taken away immediately, they are heartbroken cows when this happens its a fact! A cow that is generally a mild mannered cow will go nuts and will charge the farmer initially when separated, they know very well. The milk cow is immediately put back in the line up, a cow must stay pregnant yearly in order to continue milk production. The cow bred for beef generally has its' calf to nurse much longer and that separation is the most heartbreaking. Some of the mothers will bellow until they are hoarse for days.

They are heartbroken when separated. Mine never were. They were & always will be pets.
I had a steer, but he was always so nice to the baby cows. They loved him too.
Casey died one February & we couldn't bury him until we thawed the ground. The other cows stood by his body until we took him to bury.
It was heartbreaking. I cried with them for days.
Cows are loving & dedicated. They're awesome pets - if you have the room.
Just a P.S. for all the people who think "Pumpkin" could produce any milk at all. Cows need to give birth before they can produce milk. Since Pumpkin was 7 months old, she would not be producing any milk, chocolate or white.

ehhhhhhh, I never seen or heard any of this A cow will "charge" protecting a calf. Once they are separated though, not so much. As far as the whole "hear broken" thing, I don't mean to laugh, but...
OH! I meant to address the pregnancy thing too...uhhhh, she had it mixed up. Actually beef cattle are pretty well kept pregnant. Once a dairy cow starts producing milk, there's not need to for them to be pregnant again.

No, she was actually right.
Dairy cows only produce milk (in large quantities at least) for 9 months or so after giving birth, then "dry up". The milk is there for a reason - To feed the calf. To replenish the supply just arrange for them to have another calf!

 The only personal experience that I have with dairy is my aunt and uncle ran them so I defer to the expert but that doesn't make much sense to me. Once an animal begins producing milk, it will continue until the calf stops nursing. If it's constantly being milked it shouldn't stop.
IDK It's not anything that I'm going to lose sleep over.I KNOW THAT MILKING A BULL IS A B*TCH!!! It takes forever to get a pail full!
