its just like an emergency room visit everything done in the office is charged for from the appoinment, blood work,a fecal exam, shots, preventitive meds, nail trim, ear cleaning, i worked as a surgical nurse in a vet and was shocked at how much it all costs, owning a pet is like having another child their health care costs are almost the same, most towns have clinics where the rabies shots are free or reduced some also include other shots as well like parvo since that is such a deadly virus, and there now is insurance thats worth it for and elderly animal, but we all need our pets they always make us happy,

I tell the vet when I walk in that I only want what is absolutely necessary
and nothing more and it works for me...

It's complex. I get a senior discount, and the vet has saved my senior cat's life when I thought she was a goner
and fully expected to "put her down".... my cat was skin and bones, not eating or drinking, falling over, looked like a
dying cat. But my vet said no, let's not give up, she wanted to try another treatment. That was six years ago. I have
had my pet for six years after almost losing her to a severe infection thanks to the vet. Their costs have gone up
just as all cost of everything has gone sky high. Once you find a vet who is responsive and whose costs you
feel are reasonable, stay with him or her. I am ever grateful to the vet for saving my beautiful Ocicat when I had
given up hope that she would survive.

I live in a small town and the small town vet is 5 doors down. She has been in the same converted house for 20 years. Nothing has changed inside. Not much new fancy equipment. If you think a small town vet is cheaper, think again!! My cat had an abscess on his side. I took him down to have it checked to make sure there was no infection. She looked at it, gave him an antibiotic shot and gave me a bill for $109. I wasn't in there 10 minutes. She didn't touch it, she didn't clean it, she didn't stitch it shut. Nothing.

I think vets are capitalizing on the fact that we treat our pets like our children and are willing to pay anything to keep them with us. I'm now on a fixed income. I have paid more in vet bills in the last year than I have on myself. Look at the pet stores. Bring your pets in and let them pick out their own toys. Read what the American Veterinary Association has to say about dog and cat vaccinations. Your vet pushes them annually but they may not need annual vaccinations. Educate yourself about your pet's health. I dearly love my cat and dog but........

I live in a very poor rural area... one of the poorest countys in Illinois.. there are 2 vets here... the one I use is quite reasonable on his charges. There are somethings they can't be cheap on... they have to buy the drugs and pay for the tests to be done... but other things he tries to keep down...

The only thing I dont care for with my vet is he tends to talk down to you... like you dont know anything about whats wrong with your pet or how to care for it... after 6 years I think he is finally realizing I do know something...

I definately wouldnt want to live in a big city and pay for vet care.

I have pet insurance for my Bella Girl. It's 27.95 per month, so now when I take her for vet visits most of the vaccines are covered. She had to have surgery a few months ago, she had cancer. It would have cost me over 1000.00 for the surgery, but with the insurance it only cost 208.08. To me that was a bargain. She's well now, and both of us are cancer survivors.

I bring my animals to a mobile pet-vet. Yes, they set up, do their job, and leave. No exams. If your animals are healthy and only need shots or meds, this is the cheapest way to go. For all their shots, my dogs are $35 and cats are $20. Nothing added.

very touchy subject for me. i lost my dog last summer of 11 yrs. he was healthy except for an enlarged prostate. i took him to the vet on saturday. he was given a cathader to drain his bladder, an exray to check his prostate(because the woman vet didnt have long enough fingers) and that cost me 180.00. we scheduled an appointment for the next friday to have him neutered on my payday. neutering would help the prostate reduce the swelling. well, that wednesday, he couldnt pee and was dripping blood from his penis. he started vomiting. i was freaking out. i called the vet and they said his kineys were failing. they wouldnt see him because i was broke and wouldnt wait till friday. i called every vet in my area, the S.P.C.A., even cornell university. they all said the same thing, they want money up front. so, instead, i held my dog in my arms while he died in my bathtub. before he was gone i called my vet one last time to try to save him and beg for his life...this is what she told me...she said" if its hurting you that bad, we will wait till friday for you to get paid, if you want to bring him in and get him euthanized". i think i called her every name in the book!!! she'll wait for my money to kill him, but not to save his life? wtf kind of people are these anyway. i thought they were supposed to care about animals? so instead, i lost my best friend that could have been with me for another 10 years. so...yes, im not too fond of vets these days.
