Everybody!
I'll be taking my third trip to Hawaii in September.....I'm really excited! This will be my first to the Big Island. I'm planning to rent a car and will be there for five days and four nights. Pointers from anyone is welcomed. What's the "gotta do and see" stuff? We'll be a small group of three ladies and open to all suggestions.
We're also taking a couple of days to stay in Oahu before flying back to the mainland. Should I rent a car there? I hadn't visited there since 1978 but I do remember public transporation being ok. We want to stay on the Waikiki beach strip; any suggestions there?
Thanks!

I spent one week in "the big island". People are very friendly, I really enjoyed the market and they also have a great big swap meet where you can buy just about anything at a very cheap price. We took a short one day trip to Maui and that was really wonderful. The coffee and pineapple plantation farms was the best.We went in June, they have the King Kameya Maya parade (dont know if I spelled it correct) where all the islands make a float out of their flowers, and the parade is on the big island. It is breath taking.
Enjoy your trip.

Make sure you go to the Volcano National Park on the big island. No car needed on Oahu. For one thing parking is expensive at the hotels and is at a premium. Bus service is readily available.

Hi from Spring. Texas. I spent 3 months on The Big Island the summer of 2006. It was a working vacation, as I worked in a hospital in Hilo. My son was just out of High School and went with me. On my days off, we explored everywhere. We loved to snorkel at a place called "2 step"...take two steps off land into ocean, and you were in the most awesome, beautiful site imaginable. There are many gorgeous beaches. I also got to stay at the Waikoloa (Hilton) on the opposite side of the island for a few days (my son went camping and lobster hunting with a church group)from where we stayed and I worked. There was an earthquake one Sunday morning that woke us. Went to church that AM, and the quake wasn,t a big deal to anyone but my son and I. Must see the Volcano Nat'l park. Have a wonderful trip!!! FAY IN sPRING aLSO SPENT A COUPLE OF DAYS IN hONOLULU...PREFER tHE bIG iSLAND

I was recently in ohau in May and stayed in Waikiki. I was at the Sheraton Princess Im not going to try to spell the other half of the name. You do not need to rent a car there. I suggest you go and walk the grounds of the Royal Hawaian Hotel noted as the pink hotel. If you have a chance take a tour and go to Pearl harbor. Very moving. I also went and swam with the dolphins. The zoo is small but nice to walk around and not that expensive to get in. The island tour is also great I did that for my birthday. I want to go back to Maui next year. Im sorry if I misspelled anything. Have a great time. If you have any other questions just ask. Like I said I was just there in May. I have to say Waikiki is like the vegas strip. Very noisy. Aloha

Does anyone know if there is public transportation to Waimea Falls National Park from the Waikiki area. Just if anyone knows off hand. I'm planning on a trip to Hawaii in October. If not i'll look it up when i get a chance. Just trying to figure out if i'll need a car for one of those days. Thanks

I don't know for a fact but chances are they don't. You can always rent a car for a day.

Hiya....Lucky LAKC......... I have been to Hawaii 6 times in the past 10yrs. I love love it .We stayed in the Hawaiian Hilton Village....Lakc it's best to rent a car. many other beaches on the Island that you can drive to. Very private very beautiful .As well as so many other places. Hawaii is a very romantic place .There is also dinner cruises That leave from Honolulu ever evening .. Also great to do . So many hotels. Something going on in all of them every night. I love to dance so for me it was great.. A few drinks I though I was a native Hawaiian .. LOL On a most serious note . There are many little pockets in Hawaii that you do not want to go .. Ask so you know where they are at. Don't miss Pearl Harbor as Idscott suggested . Something every one should see . Lakc there use to be a restaurant in Wakiki that you could walk the beach to get there not far .. The name is BUZZ'S a great mom and pa place The best. They were renovating The last time there . The best place on the Island for breakfast. Try coconut syrup on your pancakes .. Hay listen have a wonderful time . Ask for a massage in your room on balcony over looking the water .. You will think you died and went to Heaven ...... I wish you safe flight... and more fun then you can handle ...... Cathy
