Thanks budstar,
First you say its too risky but then your ready to go in oct? Hmmm?
Travelling ok but not living? Ok. I figured w/all those policia
around it would be safer.
A month after the 9/11 tragedy I did a 2 month Eurailpass thru
eleven countries. Felt very safe by myself.
Crime is everywhere. I just take the normal precautions w/an
extra dose of common sense.
I`ll get back to you on that invite...jude...adios amigo...

Mexico is risky, because local government officials can basicly kick you off your property and you lose it. I am thinking about going to Costa Rica in October.

Hi, Hello, I am a boat mechanic from Pensacola Florida who has lived and worked and taught in Mexico 11 out of the past 14 years. I can tell you straight. No myths, fantasies, hype or misplaced fears. South of the border influence its a courteous, gentle culture, and I love it. Anyone who says its dangerous or risky does'nt have a handle on the real Mexico, or has'nt lived in, say, New Orleans, La. I drove to Cancun in '92. I was like, Wow! the people, the vista, all of it. My wife was like, Wow, take me to the airport, which I did. I stayed 3 months by myself, more or less. She divorced me. It was worth it.Im in Tucson for the bike race in Nov. then back to Gods country. The 3 years I worked in Mexico City were worth more than any experience in the US. any one who disagrees with me does'nt have my experience, or any experience. Talk to me. Sincerely, Sorpreso

Thank-you for the exuberant enthusiasm. Makes me want to pack my bags and leave
tomorrow, by myself if need be. I embrace travel not fear it. You nailed it w/the
lack of experience. Many people are closed minded. I grew up in downtown D.C.
surrounded by all peoples of the world. My parents were Hungarian immigrants.
You can`t generalize a whole country saying its risky. Everytime you turn a corner
there`s the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful. That is the beauty of travel.

A reality check for you to the previous reply. While the laws are harsh, the reality is soft. I worked as a motorcycle mechanic in Mexico City. The Motor Police would regularly come by Moto Servicio Revolution to get a blue eyed mech to do small repairs before a long day of soliciting bribes. I had no FM3, no permit to work of any kind; I was just better than their mechanic. They would smile, hold dollars in one hand, pesos in the other for me to choose. In Bahia de Kino, Sonora I had a boat repair shop on the main drag for two years. again no paper of any kind. What I did do was fix 4 wheelers for the Police. Also the Commandentes personal truck. His wifes car. His deputies vehicles. One of the Police trucks. They always paid, they were just glad to have stuff well and quickly repaired. A very reasonable people, Mexicans. The Mexican wealthy class are vicious parasites to their own. Avoid them and Gringo Ghettos and the border influence, which is creeping further and further South and you find Mexico the softest, gentlest of countries to live in. Experienced. Sorpreso:

Another reality check. Not from border barroom gossip or Clint Eastwood movies, but from 11 years of living and working from one end of the country to the other. First, the English gentleman is correct. The central highlands North of Guadalajuara;Tlaltenango,Colutlan Etc. are everything he says and more. Many Huichol indians, worth seeing, very friendly, very cheap. The reality,if your interested in the concept, of property confiscations, is this; invariably the confiscee was trying to run a scam on the Mexican Govt. rare. Any more misconceptions need clearing up? With pleasure, Sorpreso

Ok, but for your info, a very good friend of mine lost 3.5 million in mexico. he and 5 others bought a chunk of land and developed a retirement community, average house was 250,000. They had a quarter of the houses sold, and half of the others finished, and the last quarter 75% complete.
The mexican government revoked his title to the property, evicted everyone there, and resold all the property.
That is why I stated Mexico is to much of a risk. But what do I know!

Mexico gets a third of their hard currency from Oil, a third from Mexicans working in the US, and a third from Tourism. their policy on entering and staying in Mexico is and always has been something like " Adolf Hitler; Pase Senor, have a nice vacation! Idi Amin; Pase Senor, have a nice vacation. True, you cant buy property within 50 Klicks from the beach, But in Baja you can lease it for 99 years. And if you really like it, you can lease it for another 99 years. Where does your misinformation come from? Sorpreso

Gentlemen, gentlemen, would you two like to step outside and discuss this?

Okay, okay, i`ll rent a place or buy an RV, stay awhile and see for myself!!!
Compromise, gentlemen. You guys must be a ton of fun to travel with.lol(justkiddin)
I`m financially secure but not a Trump. As long as i have A/C, satellite tv and 4
walls, i`m happy in most situations. OK, close to the beach or a pool would be a
priority, and well, a liquor store and market nearby, essential...but other than that...
I`m good. I have no kidz or family to pass it on to anyway.
So you`ve cleared that decision up for me which i appreciate and thank-u for, i think.
Any other suggestions lovers of Mexico?

I absolutely love Mexico but prefer Panama (use to live there and in fact one of my brothers was born there). I also have checked out Costa Rico and that's beautiful as well. I do have friends that live in Guadalajara and I think they've been there for 30+ years. Have a home on the golf course - maid/cook and gardener. Property tax was about $40/year - now that's some time ago. When I flew in - they met me at the airport and we visited until my flight left for Ixtapa.

IMHO my suggestion would be to "lease" a place to begin with. I wouldn't buy something right away.

Thank you Cheryl.
I`ve resorted to resorting. lol Still doing my homework. I`m mainly focusing on finding
someone compatible to do this road-trip with. Normally, I would do the trip solo,
did Europe by myself for 2 months on Eurailpass, but driving is different.
I have no fear of traveling and luv to drive but my intuition is steering towards
having company. Unless you might feel otherwise??? I could take my dog...lol.
Finding someone as adventurous as myself has turned out to be surprisingly harder
than I thought. There is a large population of Americans already down there, I just
need to find the "ONE MORE".lol I`m in no rush, i`m patient.
If you would be so kind, where are your favorite cities? I`m leaning towards the
drier highlands, natural springs or Carribbean. I do so luv the water and swimming.
My best to you in your travels...jude...

Well I have been living just outside of Oaxaca City for 2.5 years now and love it
It is cheap and nice
Just say away from resort areas and you will find all the rest is cheap
I have a 3 bedroom home and a huge yard and I only pay $140 per month and only $20 for power
today it will be about 80 plus in the sun
P.S Oaxaca is 7 hour south of Mexico City

I have been traveling all over Mexico for the last 10 years and more times than not, alone. I it down there. Have driven on all trips. This last Christmas I went on a bus because of all the talk of danger. I observed as we were all over the place and I wished I would have taken my car. It is true, there is crime everywhere. You just have to travel with caution and then some...but that is in anything we do. San Miguel does have lots of ex pats. It is a beautiful city. I went to the state of Nayarit and I really loved it there in the countryside. Queretaro is a nice modern city. Chiapas and Quintana Roo, Oh , just a beautiful country and I love the people and the culture. I, too, along with my sister-in-law are trying to come up with a plan to spend 6 months down there and 6 months here. But I go every year around Christmas and plan on going down to Queretaro and Guanajuato hopefully around April or May again. As you all can tell I could go on and on about Mexico. There are lots of Americans all over the place down there...plus lots of people from other countries....It is awesome.
