Here is something Every American should know. Until I read this, I didn't know, but I checked it out and it's true:
We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, 'Taps.' It's the song that
gives us the lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes.
But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.
Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was
on the other side of the narrow strip of land.
During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain
decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment.
When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and
suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier.
It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out.
Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status.
His request was only partially granted.
The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.
The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate.
But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician.
The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had
found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform.
This wish was granted.
The haunting melody, we now know as 'Taps' used at military funerals was born.
The words are:
Day is done.
Gone the sun.
From the lakes
From the hills.
From the sky.
All is well.
Safely rest.
God is nigh.
Fading light.
Dims the sight.
And a star.
Gems the sky.
Gleaming bright.
From afar.
Drawing nigh.
Falls the night.
Thanks and praise.
For our days.
Neath the sun
Neath the stars.
Neath the sky
As we go.
This we know.
God is nigh
I too have felt the chills while listening to 'Taps' but I have never seen all the words to the song until now. I didn't even know there was more than one verse . I also
never knew the story behind the song and I didn't know if you had either so I thought I'd
pass it along.
I now have an even deeper respect for the song than I did before.
Remember
Those Lost and Harmed While Serving Their Country.
Also
Remember Those Who Have Served And Returned; and for those presently serving in the Armed
Forces.

A sister set me straight on this issue
Hi John , Angel here . There is a very good reason we do not kick the members of Westboro Baptist Church's collective asses . Its because that is EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT TO HAPPEN !!! Fred Phelps ,founder & head of Westboro , is a very evil & unfortunately also very smart attorney . If they can cause ANYONE to get verbally or physicly abusive with them , they sue !! Not just individuals but the state , town , PD , town council members etc . They also sue federally claiming a breach of thoer 1st amendment rights . You can win any lawsuit by "throwing paper " as in keep making folks come to court to answer discovery motions , bs depositions etc because after a bit its cheaper to settle then to keep having the normal course of life disrupted by this as well as paying for an attorney of your own to be with you . They have a compound in Kansas where there are at least 20 members typing away at motions to send to the courts in regards to the multiple lawsuits they have at any given moment . Freakin unreal I know but thats why it is vital that when Standing Flag Line we do not acknowledge thier existance or antics which can sometimes be as close as 2 or 3 ft behind us . Shoulder to shoulder 3x5ft American Flags held high even as few as 30 PGR can shield the Loved Ones of the Fallen Heroes from seeing or hearing them . In Indiana PA we had 103 of us they had 5 so it was a good day even if the area they had to protest was slightly larger then we could cover all at once as they may move back and forth quickly but we can move just as fast without breaking the solidity of the Flag Wall blocking them .
I hope that explains things and I would appreciate your doing so in our thread as we are in DH Jail until the 14th Thanks Angel

A Pittance of Time
http://www.terry-kelly.com/pittance/pittance_en_lyrics.htm
Written by Terry Kelly
They fought and some died for their homeland
They fought and some died now it’s our land
Look at his little child, there’s no fear in her eyes
Could he not show respect for other dads who have died?
Take two minutes, would you mind?
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls who went over
In peace may they rest, may we never forget why they died.
It’s a pittance of time
God forgive me for wanting to strike him
Give me strength so as not to be like him
My heart pounds in my breast, fingers pressed to my lips
My throat wants to bawl out, my tongue barely resists
But two minutes I will bide
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls who went over
In peace may they rest, may we never forget why they died.
It’s a pittance of time
Read the letters and poems of the heroes at home
They have casualties, battles, and fears of their own
There’s a price to be paid if you go, if you stay
Freedom is fought for and won in numerous ways
Take two minutes would you mind?
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls all over
May we never forget our young become vets
At the end of the line it’s a pittance of time
It takes courage to fight in your own war
It takes courage to fight someone else’s war
Our peacekeepers tell of their own living hell
They bring hope to foreign lands
that the hatemongers can’t kill.
Take two minutes, would you mind?
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls who go over
In peacetime our best still don battle dress
And lay their lives on the line.
It’s a pittance of time
In Peace may they rest,
lest we forget why they died.
Take a pittance of time
