How can you pick just one? I love Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series; any Xanth novel is always a fun read; Sharon Green has a series called the Blending that is really hard to find, but so worth it; Rob Thurman has a little series that's like a mix of Supernatural and Dresden; I could read Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series any day; love Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series; Janny Wurts also has a series starting with Curse of the Mistwraith that I go back to over and over.
Did I mention that I'm a bookaholic, lol.

Stephen Kings The Gunslinger was good, and Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth was really good until it started getting cheesy at the end....I second the Xanth novels also.

What sort of fantasy? There's a lot of sub-genres...
I'm going with Felidae, Dark Materials, LOTR, and Bunnicula.

Oooh, Bunnicula, that takes me back, I agree with Dark Materials and Dresden files, but I'd like to add for consideration the Inheritance series, (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr)
Also to those who enjoy the Dresden Files I put forward The Felix Castor series by Mike Carey, a ghost hunter in a world where ghosts are widely accepted, I won't say more other than he eventually changes his services and becomes more like a PI, he could be considered a rip off of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, but I think he can hold a place all his own. So long as Harry doesn't try to steal it.

I like Dresden too. Jim Butcher also has the Codexis Alerra series.
Wheel of Time is also on the top of my list. I just finished book 12.

I couldn't get into the Alera series, I liked the idea, but, ehh, it just didn't catch me.
Another good series is, The Annals of the Chosen By Lawrence Watt-Evans, got the first book at the library on a whim and almost went insane while trying to locate the other two.

The best fantasy series I have ever read is Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. I never get tired of them. All her books are excellent, but some are hard to find.

I fully agree with "Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series"
also anything by the late and great David and Leigh Eddings, which is where my username came from so many years ago...

Ahh yes, Pern, perhaps the first set of adult novels I read back when I was just starting to get out of my juvenile phase, my friend was shocked when he found out it was more than just three books.

Very few worth reading...the fantasy section of Borders/BDalton is a vast wasteland of derivative trash...I haven't found anything worth reading since the Thomas Covenant series...most of the good titles are old...
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever
The Lord of the Rings (of Course) The Hobbit and the Silmarillion
C. S. Lewis's NARNIA books...and his space trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength
Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy--The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and the Last Enchantment - Also A Walk Through Wolf Wood
Lord Dunsany - The Queen of Elfland's Daughter
Anything by Thomas Burnett Swann - Where is the Bird of Fire?
Whom the Gods Would Destroy (Powell or Howell--a retelling of the Illiad
The Ship of Ishtar - A. Merrit
Beowulf
Richard Adams's Watership Down and Shardik (that last a hard read, but well worth it...has a stormy Old-Testament quality...

I have to agree about the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. I've read all but the last few that came out with her son co-writing.
There is also the Witch World series by Andre Norton. There is one called Dark Company I believe to be by Glen Cook (it's been a long time since I've read it). And don't forget the Darkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

There is The Lord Of The Rings and then everything else. It's not a genre that I care to visit much anymore, aside from Tolkien's stuff ... which I haven't had to read in a few years. It's all been etched in my mind by sheer repetition.

Definitely check out Peirs Anthony's "Xanth" novels. There are like thirty of them; he's been writing them since the 70's or so. They're really funny and he is a really creative writer.

I am an avid reader and fantasy just so happens to be my favorite genre. I have read so many different series that it is hard to pick just one as "the best." So I'm going to list two that I have thoroughly enjoyed.
- Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier
This is a great series of 3 books that is about the journey of one family. It has magic, action, romance and so much more. The entire series is based on everything Celtic so if you are into Irish myth and folklore, you'll love these books. There are a bit on the action AND romance side so be forewarned there is romance intermingled in as well in this series.
- Poison Study Series by Maria V. Snyder
Although this series is located in the romance section at Barnes & Noble, it most definitely has the magical twist to it. It is about a female prisoner who is condemned to die because she murdered her cartaker's son. She is the next in line to die so she is offered either to die or become the food taster for the commander. She takes the food tasting position and soon finds out that she has powers and that there is this whole other world she is unaware of. I can't give much more away or it will ruin it if you ever read it. But also be forewarned, it does contain some romance, too. LOL
Good luck finding that series that is "the best" to you!!

Another for Zelazny's Amber series. Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson. IMO, the second series isn't as good.
Now why hasn't anyone mentioned Harry Harrison's "Stainless Steel Rat" yet?
Not a series, but amusing fantasy are Tom Holt's books. Not easy to find, but worth the searching.

I have got to second the Song of Ice and Fire series. I am currently reading the third book in the series, and it is awesome. I cannot wait for the HBO adaptation. It has a lot of really good people in it, and because Martin himself is writing some of the episodes, it should be reasonably close the source material.

1) The Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkein
2) Dragon Riders of Pern by Ann McAfferty
3) The various books about Lazarus Long (AKA .. Woodrow Wilson Smith) and the Howard Families by Robert Heinlein
4) River World by Philip Jose Farmer
5) The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan ..... I was dismayed to hear of the death of Robert Jordan in 2007. Thankfully, for those of us enamored by his Wheel of Time series, he wrote the outlines for the final 3 volumes and chose Brandon Sanderson to finish his work prior to his death from cancer. After reading The Gathering Storm (book 12 of the series) I have to say he made a good choice. Brandon Sanderson has managed to continue the series with an amazingly accurate imitation of Robert Jordan's writing style. Not an easy thing to do when you consider the complexity of the story and plot of this series.
There are several other series that I have enjoyed over the years, but they don't fall into the Fantasy catagory.

I think I need to visit the library, there are some interesting titles listed here...
To everyone who likes Jim Butcher, YOU ROCK, Dresden is great and I LOVE the Codex Alera!!
To everyone who liked the Sword of Truth series... never mind. My mom always said if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.
