I just spent 3 weeks there, in Pattaya, I'd been there in the Navy, it's changed alot. One thing that hasn't changed is the "night life". If I have to see one more 90 year old man walk buy with a teenage hooker, I'll scream. I'm in Singapore now, much nicer. It's expensive, but worth it!

I spend about half my time in the Land of smiles. It will be my "florida" a great place to retire. Shhh dont tell anyone. Kindness is the rule. True enough folks get angry but then it is out like a passing storm. Food is great. There seems to be something for everyone. I prefer the mountainous north country as opposed to the pampering tourist meccas of Pattaya and Phuket. Democracy is slowly evolving in fits and starts. The King is getting old (bless his heart) and changes are coming. In my yet to be published book;Change/chaos is good. Here in the risk managing West where insurance and credit rule, some folks want guarantees. Bad things happen to good people is a lesson they learn early there. They may not have as much $/toys as the West, but also a lot less whiners and victims. Life is getting better and people feel good about the future in general or dont complain about it so much. I go into major culture shock when I return here to New England where smiling at strangers is an aggressive act and sex and massage is seem to be somehow seedy. Bless us all.

I agree with going to North of Thailand. Chiang Mai and beyond. The water gets cleaner, the population less dense, the air cleaner. I did trekking up into the hilltribes near Myanmar in July last year, and it was an absolutely unforgettable experience. The people are so humble, kind and friendly. It tore at my heart when I saw all the barricades surrounding Bangkok, and all the fighting a few months back. This must have a hugely negative effect on these people.

The beaches don't interest me, for one, I can go to Australia or anyone of the Pacific Islands if I want beaches. I hear the Thai beaches are over-represented with Westerners, which may be some of the reason Thai's get pretty shitty tempered at times, some Westerners get pretty demanding. The child sex slave industry is alive and kicking in many of these areas. I just couldn't face all that.

My friend has gone there to live for a year. He has been living in Pattaya for a month now. The one thing he learnt from another Westerner, never ever hire a jet ski. These are owned by the Mafia. The scam is that you hire it, take it out, when you return it, they point out all the 'existing' damage to the underside of the ski, and threaten you until you pay for the damage.

Personally, the north was unbelievable. Very untouched rain forests, crystal clear water, a bit cooler with altitude and the wildlife is quite prevalent if you want to see this. Elephant riding was quite a buzz, holding a tiger cub was unreal!

Highly recommended destination!

A few things I learnt: It should not cost more than 300 baht to get a taxi from the airport to Bangkok. Agree on a price before you get in the cab. Get cabs with meters only. Cabs are cheaper than Tuk Tuk's but Tuk's are heaps more fun!!!

The government pay for people dressed in uniform with ID's to stand on street corners and give you FREE information on things to see and do. They will point you to their nearest TOT office, which is run by the government, and if you book all your tours and accommodation with them, you can save up to 50% on your entire vacation! Very very helpful and informative offices! They speak great English too, and will tailor a whole tour based on what spins your wheels. They are non-profit, and therefore not there to scam you.

If a nice polite, well spoken and dressed person approaches you (generally because you look lost or are reading a map) and they say that they are a school teacher, and today is their day off, they are about to scam you into taking overpriced tours. Just politely tell them that you are ok, and be on your way. They do sound very legit though!

They say not to drink anything containing ice (I saw why while I was touring) and don't eat icecream. I did both of these things on my first day, figured that if I was gonna get sick, I wanted it over and done with. I never even got a sore throat!

I actually went to Thailand to get the fillings in my teeth replaced. Not only was it one-eighth the price of getting it done in NZ or Australia, it was the best dental care I have ever experienced. The dental labs were hygienic, state of the art, modern. The dentists have to spend 5 years training as a doctor first, one year specialising in dentistry, then 4 years as an assistant before they can practice! That blew my mind when my dentist told me that! I will never go anywhere ever again to have my teeth worked on. Thailand is it for me. I actually fell asleep in the chair twice!

Have a great trip for those about to travel! Hope some of this info was interesting or helpful.

Hi, I went to Bangkok on TDY from Vietnam in 1966. I went back for 6 weeks in Feb-Mar 2009 and again for the month of Dec 2009. My son lives in Bangkok and has a very nice 2 bedroom condo right in the center of the city. I agree with KIwi's comments and would like to add the the sky train (called the BTS) is excellent. Trains come every few minutes and they are clean and air conditioned. There is also a subway system and there are a number of stations where one can transfer from the BTS to the subway. Also, on the subway one can get a discount if you are a senior citizen. Another fun thing is to take the river taxis. They are cheap and fun. There are two type of river taxis, some just go across the river and others go up and down the river.
