I can name two if you don't mind a little magic with your mysteries,
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher,
and
Felix Castor series, (am unaware of a series title) by Mike Carey.

I love mysteries. One of the best mystery authors(in my opinion) is Agatha Christie. I would recommend Hercule Poirot's Casebook.

In the mystery genre, I tend to go with oldies but goodies...Agatha Christie, Dashielle Hammett, etc. I like: Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, Nick & Nora Charles, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and the like.

I liked Butcher's Harry Dresden wizard P.I. stuff...until he fired a five shot S&W Chief's revolver six times without reloading. Stupid mistakes like that really shatter the suspension of disbelief.

yes i agree the older authors like the ones you cited are in most cases better then the new ones like sue grafton, janet evanovich, james patterson, and sidnry sheldon. i am not saying that the nwer authors are bad, they are not.
of all the agatha cristie books how many were actually written be ms cristie and not by her estate.

Speaking of thrillers... I read John Saul's Suffer the Children when I was in my early twenties and had to drive 20+ miles to spend the night at my brother's. I should read it again to see if it scares me as much.
