MMA is nothing more than pankration which is 1500 years old. Yes there are rules as it is not a duel to the death but the tournaments now are full of pro athletes that would destroy the typical blackbelt due to their training schemes.

I have known alot of people who have gone on to fight semi-pro and what not and I will say that it takes quit the person to date a fighter. Schedule conflicts, strict diets, limited time and things such as that make it hard to do so but if you love them then it's all you have to do is to support them.
