To start, I must say, I loved both books. Big fan of dystopias.

In both cases the authors were picking one or two things they saw in society and overblowing them, trying to show the dark side of humanity.

A few years ago, I would have said we were closer to being in "Brave New World" and I almost would have said it wouldn't be too bad. We have a drug for everything now. Hearing voices? Take a pill. Think you don't look good? Take a pill. Unhappy? Take a pill. And a few years ago, we were very close to that disposable society, with the art of repair almost gone.

However, we have entered a period of economic stress, and people are trying to save in any way they can, and repair instead of replace is returning. Our calls can be monitored by the government. Standardized tests are a staple of public education now. We are at war with an idea, "terrorism." So we are practically fighting phantoms. However, I don't think the American people would stand for a government that controlling.

I think we're right smack dab between the two at the moment, though it is unlikely that we'll ever become either society.
