It was a French book compiled of short stories translated into English. One story was of two women who did not have any food for themselves and had a small dog. They couldn't feed the dog and decided to take it and drop it down a shaft. After they did this they heard the growl of a much bigger dog already down in the shaft, and he was hungry. Another story in the book was about the war and a woman who was caught by men and forced to lay on a table while a line of men lined up to have their turn with her and her small son was waiting by the head of the table for mama. This book was old and it was borrowed from me and they never brought it back. I would love to get another copy of it but can't remember its' name. A French short story writer from before the war. I think it was the first war, but not sure.

I don't know what book those stories were in. But, from what you've described about the content, this would be an extraordinary book. Should you discover the title, please pass it on. You've sparked my interest, and I would like to get a copy of it.
