It seems that the answers of the males thus far reflect what is known from research on attraction and mating. That males cannot express what they look for in a female partner is not surprising. Mate selection is rooted in the limbic brain (primitive brain) where in a male assesses a potential partner's health and likelihood of producing healthy offspring. Such assessments occur very quickly and without any effort on the part of the male. It is unconscious and immediate.

Women also assess in the same way along with an added assessment for security and protection of both she and her offspring. The preferred mating partner has strong and healthy genetic features and more importantly, is likely to stay around to protect and provide for she and her offspring.

Beyond the initial assessments, how partners attach enters into the process along with individual character traits, behavior, etc.

The question of why many pair-bonds are not successfully mated for life enters and a number of variables emerge. A significant variable is the one that someone identified in suggesting the OP was looking for particular behavioral and personality traits to which she could conform. While I don't believe this is true of the OP. It is a problem for both male s and females.

Rather than present their authentic selves, they present a somewhat socially acceptable facade until they have learned enough about the potential love interest to present a reflection of what they say they want in a mate. In order to be accepted and to achieve what they desire physically, they reflect what the other desires rather than drop the facade and present their authentic selves (warts and all).

Interestingly, as this dance culminates in a wedding and the "I dos" are exchanged, followed by being pronounced as husband and wife, a colleague and I believe that these people revert to their authentic selves as they turn to face the witnesses and our introduced by the officiant.

During the honey moon or shortly after, the authentic selves are revealed and each wonders who is this person and why did they change? The answer is simple, they didn't change, they simply dropped their masks and now you see the real person because "they've got you now". In a sense, they own you as the marriage license is, in a sense, a deed of ownership and appears to have a psychological effect antecedent to dropping the false selves presented to "get the guy/girl".

It's a tougher act as one matures due to experience and fewer older males and females tend to reveal more of their authentic selves when they want something deeper than a sexual encounter. Those who are simply looking to get laid will likely reflect the type of person that the other indicates that they desire in a mate. This works both ways and is not only typical of one gender.

With the exception of the information on attraction and the biological drives and activities of the limbic brain, these observations are anecdotal (meaning without scientific data supporting the conclusions). As a relationships professional, myself and other colleagues have frequently observed these dynamics in couples and the process of partnering.


My recommendations to both genders is to present your authentic selves from the beginning; truth in advertising as it were. By doing so, both individuals know what they are buying and are not subject to the "bait and switch" that seems so prevalent in relationships.

i dont want perfect i want a loving and kind harted person. looks are important dont get me wronge i was with a girl because of her morals but the steam left fast we are still realy good friends but the breakup crushed her so not trying that one again a cute face is a main one as long as the chest aint completely flat where good. longer hair the better
