What is it that you want to know? What is it that you want to achieve? I have sold securities for the biggest firm on Wall Street, and I made an insane amount of money doing so. You won't learn how to invest reading The Wall Street Journal or Investor's Daily. You won't make your fortune day trading or working the monetary markets, nor will you do very well with most mutual funds. How much time will you be willing to invest? How much money are you willing to invest? Too many questions...

When bonds are up, stocks will drop. When stocks are up, bonds will go down. Buy when others are selling, so you get the lower price. Sell when others are buying, so you get a higher price. Buy penny stocks-OTC items selling for less than a dollar-and buy them on the first day of issue. Buy stocks in firms which dabble in: computer gear, medical equipment, communications goods and services, other high tech gizmos, and the sex industry. Pick your own individual stocks yourself, rather than letting a broker select for you. Avoid mutual funds like the plague.

I followed these general guidelines, and actually MADE money during the 1987 stock market crash in which professional investor Warren Buffett LOST 7 Billion dollars in a single day.

Shows how smart I am siri would have made me another $300 today but not as bad as when I sold 10,000 shares at 47 cents, only a $10,000 mistake. $100,000 mistake selling apple.

Read Buffetology. Warren Buffet's ex daughter in law wrote it and it's probably the greatest book you'll ever read on investing...main point, Warren buys stocks in businesses he enjoys, understands, and the numbers are right.

If you want to learn investing in general, read Rich Dad, Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki...almost every successful investor will recommend his series.

Right now you have to have a lead belly to stay in the market on my 401 k lost over 150,000 since this recession started- I've regained at least 100 k but last week with 400 points going down in 1 day who knows how much I lost- if you stay in the market you will make money but like I said before you have to have a lead belly- you can not overreact- I know there's more money out there in gold guns in muscle cars- if you have the ability to take your money out of the stock market I would suggest doing it- there are some great deals in the housing market right now- real estate has always been king long term

@99finesilver -
long = bet on a stock
short = bet against a stock
put = right to sell at a certain price (used to hedge long position or just as a way of shorting without losing more than the cost of the put)
call = right to buy at a certain price (used to go long a stock when you don't want to pay the full share price up front, and you also want to limit losses)
collar = selling off the rights to some of your upside potential on stock you own to pay for insurance on the downside potential. Best used when you expect mild gains, but you're not entirely confident that it won't backfire. If calls are expensive and puts are cheap, you can insure your holding at a net gain, and have the bonus of keeping part of the upside before the call strike is reached. (Personally, I don't like collars -- they're like insuring yourself to death. You don't lose much, but you don't gain much either. Might as well just put your money in the bank.)
If you're doing an option strategy, straddles/strangles are fun.
Incidentally, everything about options trading sounds perverted.
