ilithi_dragon Groton, CT 30, joined Sep. 2010	They're probably experiencing a euphoric endorphin high that they are interpreting as a religious experience that is really more of a chemical and emotional feedback from 'worshipping' in a large crowd. You can get the same kind of euphoric group oneness, etc. in any crowd sharing a positive/happy experience, that's a big part of why I loved the opening and closing campfires and songs, skits, etc. in Scouts, because being part of a mass group celebration feels very, very good. Our brains are wired to dope us with feelings of goodness about group solidarity and we get positive feedback on our emotions from large groups of people (positive and negative). Which is why you see such extravagant outcryings of worship/love of god/etc. during large congregations, and why people enjoy going to church. It's the group activity and solidarity and positive feedback of emotions that we enjoy, and that can drive people to extravagance because their positive feedback drives them to a euphoric high that they think is a religious/spiritual touch of god.
