This will be the first time I've been alone on this holiday in a long long time. I mean, I do miss him but since things didnt work out with us for a reason, I know that breaking up was the right thing to do. Still, I miss having someone special in my life, especially during the holidays. Its going to feel weird and just a little sad not having anyone to be with on valentines day. My friends have offered for us all to go out and have some fun, but I told them I'm just not up for it.

I want to ask all of you who have gone through this before or who are single and going through it now, what were some of the things you did (or are doing) to cope with being alone? I'm thinking that reading some of the things other people did to cope will help give me some ideas on what things I can do to get through valentines day.

I didn't read your whole post but you are only 22.

Go out and have fun. Get your mom, sis, or grandmother something.

This probably won't be your last V day alone. J/S

Sucker !

It's just another day on the calendar, that the Hallmark MBA's conned you into believing it was relevant.

What is relevant is what they do the other 364 days each year.

It sounds like she is still getting over her ex though.

I got my dog, Reeses, for Valentines Day. Best gift I ever got. It is the gift that keeps on giving. He is 11 now.

You're young and very cute.

On Valentine's Day why not volunteer some of your time. Take a few of your friends too.

Volunteer a few hours at an assisted care or long term care facility. The elderly would be delighted to have you help with crafts or go to the Dollar Store and grab some candy hearts to hand out.

Local Animal Shelter

Meals on Wheels

You'll do a good thing and I promise you'll feel better about yourself too.

There are some good ideas here already, but I'll add these thoughts.
Valentine's Day isn't just for lovers...

Make dinner for your parents/grandparents/siblings/even just some other single
friends...you're bound to not be the only one single.

Volunteer for some local organization, even a local nursing home. Believe it or not helping others normally takes your mind off of yourself and your problems. And older
people in Nursing Homes are often lonely, neglected, and often unable to do simple things like read to themselves because of their age, or medical troubles. I know this because I have spent hours reading to the elderly at local ones. They enjoy it, and it makes me feel good.

Volunteers are also needed at animal shelters, libraries, hospitals, Homeless Shelters, on and on.....

Bake cookies and take them to a local business or school, they enjoy it, and again you'll feel good doing something for others. Call a few days ahead to one of the schools locally, and ask about something you could do there for Valentine's Day
(any day for that matter) they often have parties, and with most parents working
nowdays, getting parent volunteers is difficult. Again, I have volunteered locally and read to the younger classes. They love it! And the Teachers are always thankful for the break to catch up on lessons plans or just have a breather.

The main thing is, just enjoy the day. The spirit of it is about Love...not just between a Man and a Woman (or woman and woman, man and man, I'm not judging). Why not celebrate it?

Drinking? Crying in your beer? Lamenting your alone-ness? I donno...sounds like you're adding a bit of pain for yourself for such a simple day...sure "everyone else" has a date, and is getting um..er..chocolates..but you..

My advice, stop watch television until it's over..then you won't have to see or hear about 'everyone else' getting diamonds and making love..

I don't think that I ever had a Valentine (person or gift/card) for Valentine's Day. Even when I was married. It just isn't that important to me. Halmark and candy companies make enough mough money the rest of year. Just not a romantic at all.

I have never had a significant other on Vday. Always broke up before it, or started dating after it. Honestly, I just treat it like any other, and find some person you know, and do something that might brighten up their day. Doesn't have to be a SO, can be anyone in your life.

The last valentines date I had was a nightmare..I had a meet and greet with a guy I had been talking to on the phone and online for a few months. He had tickets for a very nice dinner so I agree to meet him that night..he was more interested in the 20 yr old waitress than he was with me and became very disrespectful to the point of me walking out on him..my late hubby and I never celebrated valentines day after we married, so it's just another day to me..

You know that's not an actual holiday, right? RIGHT?

Valentine's Day is for school kids K-4, with the ever so cute little mailboxes made from an old shoebox that Mom has saved since the Great School Clothes (and shoes) Shopping Extravaganza at end of summer. All the cute little candy hearts and Scooby Doo valentines and those honeycomb tissue hearts hung everywhere...culminating with The Class Party and pop and all those nifty cupcakes and stuff.

And for grandmas, when you haven't visited as regularly as you should and are trying to get back in her good graces. I never had a grandpa, but I imagine it wouldn't work so well on them. Mebbe a nice box of Cubans.

BTW: It should prolly be illegal for 22 yos to use the phrase, "For a long time". "Long long time" should have a double penalty. Where's Homeland Security when you need an inane, anal retentive bureacrat with inane, anal retentive hall monitor rules, anyway?

Take your Mom, Dad, Aunt, even a girls a night out to dinner and a movie. Don't, under any circumstance stay home...the loneliness you are feeling will only be amplified. TV is horrible, since it will probably be playing lots of Valentine'ish shows.

Take your Mom, Dad, Aunt, even a girls a night out to dinner and a movie. Don't, under any circumstance stay home...the loneliness you are feeling will only be amplified. TV is horrible, since it will probably be playing lots of Valentine'ish shows.

Youngin?

I wish.
