I'm completely hooked on India these days. My favourite author is Amitav Ghosh - and there is no one in second place. He has a new novel coming out the end of this summer, the sequel to The Sea of Poppies called The River of Smoke and I can't wait! I'm reading The Glass Palace by him now. I read a very good bio on Gandhi. Also "The Distance" by Saborna Roychowdhury... I like some Kipling, but haven't read a lot of his stuff.

I'd love to find out if others have been reading anything Indian and what they liked or disliked about it.

Very interesting. Gandhi's biography is very good. It shows that even great people have weak moments!

Hey there, Stranger!

Yes, I found that the author of the bio I read was very fair. Although he idolized the man, he wrote such a balanced description of his life that I came away with a different view and feeling angry at Gandhi Ji. What a strong, intelligent visionary, but what huge mistakes he made, too! His closest friends and mentors feem to have advised him to be quiet and look around him, but he apparently refused to heed them to what I see has extremely violent ends.

Do you remember which bio you read, Sanjay? I read The Life and Death of Mahatma Gandhi by Robert Payne.

Good reading those. If you are into fiction you may like Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra, it is a tome however.

I love tomes. And I've heard of that book. Is it historical fiction? That's my favourite. I have such respect for authors who write that genre.
