You could say its both really, depends on how the person looks at it I guess.
I look at it that people who are scared to die will seek out religion and brainwash themselves into that way of life.

OK, for the believer it may mean "sense of security"... but for the a**hole who profit from the believer religion is nothing but a mean to make money.

Some people arent strong enough to find their own way...they need guidance. They need a reason for all the "why's" in life. Thats where religion is useful. Youve got a reason for all your questions. It also serves as a safety net. If someone challenges your ideas, you can simpily say "Its what I believe in" and the other person will hopefully respect that and leave you alone.
You can dream up anything you want in your mind and rely on it for a level of comfort to get you through each day. ie: Religion

Well, although I agree for many people religion is an anchor...I still say that ignorance must be eradicated if the goal is to create a positive society.

of course its a scam thats why it was created : Jim&Tammy Baker,Jim Jones the spanish inquizition ,the Salem witch trials and many others
it a dangerous scam to take money and maybe your life all under the guidance of the allmighty gawd
