When people feeding off the treasury learn that it comes with a cost, a cost exceeding what those that already pay can afford, maybe they will begin to understand the damage their freeloading is doing to our country. Maybe they will get off thier asses and contribute rather than reap benefits for free by stealing from their neighbors using the government as their Robin Hood. If they continue to be greedy like they are, we will be Greece soon.

And remind me once again WHO is it that signs your paycheck and will be paying your retirement hypocrit?

WHO will sign my retirement paycheck ? Well for me:

Work Retirement - KAPERS, The retirement system I have been paying into for 28 years. A public retirement investment company.

Military Retirement - The good tax payers of the United States. Opps, that me. I'm a good tax payer.

OH, I will be signing my check(S) also but on the back. Yeehaw

The CFO of the company I work for signs my big paycheck. I'm not sure who signs the military retired pay one because it is direct deposit.

I rmember I made $177 a month as a private when I started at Fort Knox in 1971. After taxes and the stuff they deducted for food, laundry, etc. I took home about $125 a month. In 1972 I made about $300 a month in Vietnam (got promoted a couple times and combat pay of $50 a month).

When my college buddies were making 6 figure salaries 10 and 15 years after graduation, I still never broke $50K up until I retired after more than 20 years. When I was making about $40K as an instrument rated pilot, my civilian counterparts were making well into 6 figures. I figure the difference is money they put back because they sure weren't paying me a fiar wage back then.

Through basic (Ft. Dix) I made $54.00 a month. I can't remember for sure but I believe I jumped upto $68.00 a month in AIT (Aberdeen Proving Grounds). Man was I rolling in dough. Wish life was that sweet now.

We had a lot more bases here than overseas back then, too. We keep sending more troops overseas and establishing more bases there, even in Australia of all places, while we continue to close bases here at home. That makes no sense.

Anyone that lives near a closed or curtailed military base will tell you the devasting effect it has on local economies. Why not bring our people back home and reopen those bases and fire up our economy here rather than having installations and troops spend their money in places like Europe, Japan, Australia, and Panama? All they are really doing is stimulating overseas economies when we could be spending those same dollars and putting them to good use here at home?

We don't need a worldwide presence with giant military footprints anymore, especially in light of how quickly we can deploy entire divisions when needed. A small representative force that can secure a "beach head" for a few days is sufficient in the event we need to move a bunch of folks into some place quickly.

When we send troops overseas it should be to crush and break things like we are trained to do rether than stimulate some other country's economy.

Very sound arguement JB, and on this we are in complete agreement. We do not have to fear another countries military, we have to fear their economies and quite fighting and start trading fairly with each other. We need some Honest people in high places and we need it fast.
