Bier I looked it up and there is good stuff in the VA article. I went to my VSO and talked to him about it and he said, "Go for it." There are a lot of programs for veterans and I think we should take advantage of them if we have a need.

Thoughts on this?

Here is something for you.

If you served in the '60's your time in serves may have not been reported to Social Security. Check with them and make sure it was. This could increase the amount of SS that you receive. IF that time is not on record take your DD214 to your local SS office and get it on there. IT"S YOUR MONEY.

This is true. It happened to my brother. He served two and a half tours but was only credited with two. He did get it straightened out, was given any back pay ... before his death.

Quote from just_zoe1958:
Nicely put Skysoldier.
Never feel ashamed or apologize for being a Veitnam Veteran. I am a civilian and maybe a bit naive, but I feel that you did what was asked of you, put your lives at risk, and went with good intentions. I feel just as much honored to shake a Vietnam Veteran's hand as I do with a WWll Veteran's hand or any other Veteran.
I wonder sometimes if it was just a hippie, drug, sexual thing that some crazy people went through and had nothing to do with Vietnam War.
Zoe, our Vietnam Vets are barely getting the help that was long over due to them. I'm of the same theatrical operation, so I'm here at the VA with them. These guys are slightly older than me and are the greatest friends in my life. I'm so glad they are getting treated for the Agent Orange they were exposed to in Vietnam and the manufacturing facilities. Please see your service officer for additional information. Check your local VA for classes such as Meditative Movement

I remember a time when none of us talked about it except to each other (if at all). Now I go to the VFW and the younger vets want to know all about Vietnam and show serious interest in our war-and respect. I was in a grocery store a few days back wearing a 101st/Vietnam baseball hat and this young guy (a manager of some sort) kept shaking my hand thanking me to such a point that it bordered on embarrassing! Times have changed and my hope is that this (and future generations) of men and women who serve are appreciated and properly cared for -that is the best thanks this old soldier could ever pray for!

The Iraqi and Afghanistan veterans are always appreciative of our service. I thank them so much for the multiple deployments they did. Now I heard that some scumbags mistreated some of our disabled veterans.

I'm a Veteran myself, I was in a conversation with a friend of mine that worked for the state of California, he was not a veteran and did not believe that vets are entitled to any benefits.
Someone else got into the conversation that is a federal employee and almost bragged that he had a chance to hire a veteran that was more qualified than the person he hired.
This person looked at me the (Federal Employee) and he realized what he said. I asked him why he made that decision and he gave me a look of embarrassment.
Since I am a Federal employee myself I know that it is a no no in the Federal Government to circumvent veterans benefits in hiring with the Federal Government.
But some work needs to be done on some of our states and municipalities and I mean the State of California.

Right up the road, at UF, a retired colonel plopped down in a lawn chair outside that frat house with a flag and a book. The chapter in question is now closed. Some school bigwig is a retired general. Dude was livid. I don't expect too much from these little creeps. Wouldn't surprise me if it happened at my school (College of Central Florida).

I seldom run into anyone who can knowledgeably discuss Vietnam unless they experienced it. It touched our generation ,not just us who went, but those who didn't and those next of kin and families that suffered it with us for some years after our return or those still haunted by it to this day. I could give a rats a** what some frat kid thinks about us or some burned out hippy or chick who is hanging on to the idea that she knows what Vietnam was about and thinks her venom is best directed at those who fought ,sacrificed and too often died there. I wouldn't give a cup of warm piss to hear their rants. What they don't understand is the failure of elected leaders in this country (both parties)who allowed their ego, personal political agenda and private wealth to send this country, the Vietnamese , Laos and Cambodia into a tragic waste of human lives over a perceived threat that never was real. Today China is one of our largest trading partners and lenders--that's a Communist country. Vietnam is Communist and they are emerging as a rising industrial power and trading partner...the list goes on. Communism often fails on its own under a repressive regime-its a dictatorial model of government - but we changed nothing by invading that country, seeking to force democracy at gunpoint.. and we are doing it still.

I don't like fireworks gdaddy.I will go see the big displays at certain events because I know what to expect, but when some dummy just drops a big boom behind me or whatever when Im not expecting it I get a little hinky. Sorry.Im in Daytona and they have been shooting that stuff off all day at our campground.I just stay inside. At least I still know the difference (especially between incoming and outgoing)

i'm no fan of fireworks either. just completed a thirty hour sail north from san diego with my dog skipper to our new boat home in channel islands harbor north of LA. big doins' tonight in the harbor with bands, dancing, fireworks. skipper is fearless until a boom happens so we'll be hunkered down in the c*ckpit of the boat with a big bag of puperoni treats instead of boogieing with the chicks. f**k fireworks.

Im with you jrbogie.I padded Boners hootch here in the motor coach up real well since our wreck and when the fireworks start he gets in there and doesn't come out. Last night the shit was landing on the roof of my coach and these yahoo's were shooting the stuff up until about 1 in the a.m. They took one clown out of here yesterday after he burned himself lighting a damn thing the size of a mortar shell. My gal (shes a RN/EMT) helped treat him until they came to get him. Alcohol and pyrotechnics don't mix very well....

Not to say that I don't still flinch when I hear a loud explosion but I surely wouldn't go public with it. I was with my crew a couple of months back and we were splicing a fiber optic cable at night. We were in a small work trailer out in the "back 40". Mortar tubes firing and training going on. I jumped every time one would explode. Very loud. I just don't want to see people go public with it. Sorta embarrassing I think.

didn't see what you're talking about, daddy, but i can't imagine thinking a veteran discussing his fears is silly. i had a conversation at a dock party on the 4th with an 88 year old veteran. he went on and on about his 'greatest generation' and how he hasn't ever seen ww2 vets whining about ptsd as vietnam and now afganistan and iraq crybaby veterans do and how he and his 'greatest generation' just did their job, obeyed orders, ousted evil across the world and didn't whine about it and blah blah blah. i tried my best to keep my powder dry and not open fire on the idiot but finally broke down and getting up to walk away i ended the conversation with, "well i guess you don't see us a brothers in arms so f**k you and your greatest generation."

D*ckie, what was he thinking? JR, the conversation you had with WWII veteran is wrong on his part. I've run into a Korean Vet that ask me if I was a Nam boy. The he told me, "you people lost your war." I had to hold my wife back. Oh well. I just considered the source. Not all feels like that.
I am in total sync with you on veterans discussing their feeling. I just don't think one should bring it to national TV about shooting fireworks. Did you see it on television?

irv.Its been said no war is over until the last combatant dies. I believe that to a degree.I know vets from Vietnam at our Post who cant talk about anything else. especially when they are drinking. I reminisce a bit and have my stories, but it wont ever drive me to putting my Kimber.45 in my mouth and saying goodbye. Im sorry for those that did and we will never know how many suicides are connected to the wars we have conducted. That "Wall " would be enormous. JMHO

For some time now we have been hearing of "lone wolf" attacks planned by extremists living among us. I don't know how we can anticipate and prevent every such attack in a open and free society. That's why I don't go many places without my Kimber 45. "Id rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6"! And if I had to I wouldn't hesitate to use it to protect myself or others. But what bothers me most about these kind of killings is often radicalized (or mentally ill) mad dogs go unreported by people around them who can assist law enforcement in identifying them before they kill.

The shooter knew this was a "soft target" and would have no problem. I'm thinking if the whole of the people in the U.S. carried and everyone knew that this is the way it is, maybe there wouldn't be so much of this kind of crime. The shooter would know he would die immediately

The governor over in Indiana is going to allow certain members of the Guard there to wear sidearms while on duty in uniform.
