Love isn't an intellectual excersise, nor is it a prize earned by merit. People love who they love, and it isn't always rational and isn't always fair. Usually when a person says, "I love you", it becomes a tattoo on their heart and blazes in their consciousness how well we hear those words. Relationships only work out when both parties want and are committed to each other with equal intensity. For a relationship to work there has to be love, and if there is indecision, it's not love. Part of the intensity of love, is its vulnerbility. Knowing that you're never in control; that you're giving all of yourself and it can be taken at any time in terms of your feelings. It's like life on the edge. You can open up your heart and, as it so often happens, you get burnt. It is a small consolation to know that virtually everyone goes thru that in life, usually more than once.The only way to protect yourself from ever having that happen to you, is to never fall in love in the first place. Problem is, that's an empty life.
