People keep asking me what I want.
I want a life where I’m able to provide for my children, and able to raise them to be the best adults they can possibly be. I want a house with plenty of room to live, and be, and play, and explore any interest I might have, and feel secure.
In addition, I want to share my life with a man who loves me passionately and treats me as though he couldn’t imagine losing me, never grows complacent in our relationship. A man who loves me and my children and wants to be part of our family, accepting me and them regardless of any flaws or differences he may perceive. Part of me is my children, and being with me means being involved with them. It does not mean you can get by with saying hi to them every once in a while, or physically recoiling at the thought of spending time with them. Being with me means sharing your interests with me, and sharing mine.
It means treating me with honesty, respect, dignity, tenderness. Thinking I’m your world and never forgetting it even if you are drunk, out of town, or see something you think you might like to sample. I want a man who knows that, and practices that. I want a man who empathizes with me, and accepts my emotional ups and downs as real emotion, and does not dismiss it as mere “moodiness.” Take seriously my concerns, my hopes, my dreams, all my thoughts. Respect my decisions and my answers and know that they will not change; when I make a decision it is my final answer. I already am who I will be. I won’t try to change him if he doesn’t try to make me fit into what he wants out of someone.
I don’t want to be someone’s; I want to be with someone. I don’t want fairy tale love. I want real love and all it includes. Forever. That’s what it means to me. None of these things are less important than the others. If it’s too much for you and you can not or will not commit to our lives together before God and the world, move on, before you let me waste years of my life creating a home and family with you.
That is what I want, in my life—the short list anyway.
I enjoy all the normal stuff: spending time with my kids, reading (a lot), movies, live music, etc.
