I have a male 15 month old Golden Retriever that is AKC registered. He is my first purebred animal. How do I go about breeding him? All my other pets are rescues and spayed, but I'd like to get a little $$ back on my golden.

So how do I go about tactfully "Pimping my dog"?

Before I would ever consider breeding my dog, I would look into the statistics of purebred dogs that end up in pounds, rescues, or euthanized each year. It's not just mixed breeds that this happens to.
I am friends with the local warden, and he is hard pressed to place dogs. He does his level best to never euthanize unless they are too sick to recover, or too vicious to rehabilitate. He recently had a man bring in 3 purebred Bichon Frise dogs because the man just didn't want them anymore.
There are a lot of people who fall in love with a "cute" puppy, purchase it, then it piddles on the floor, or chews up a favorite shoe and gets disposed of. The statistics are staggering. There are not enough homes, and too many homeless pets.

I currently have 5 in my care- 2 are mine by my choice, 1 was my Mom's that I took in when she passed away, 1 was my sons, that due to not being able to keep it where he lives, and as the dog is deaf, it is also with me. The last is one that we fostered then adopted from the pound (she'd been abused, then left tied in the previous owners yard, abandoned when they moved away and has severe separation anxiety issues (chewed a new pair of my slippers yesterday, because I had to leave the house for a while, no she did not get in trouble, this is not her normal behavior, just under stress) that my youngest son claimed as his. But guess who pays for the feed?

Please consider all of the statistics and probabilities, before you breed your dog.

I volunteer with my local Humane Society and am aware of the overpopulation problem. I have another dog and 4 cats that are all rescues and all spayed. I also know there are breed specific rescue organizations for every breed in nearly every state, Golden Retrievers included, and that people dump, abuse and kill pet animals every day. I had a difficult time buying this one and have a decent amount of guilt about breeding him because of the staggering statistics. I may well only do it once, or even not at all.

I'm in a small town with very few breeders or kennels, the main one being the one where I got him from, so most goldens in my area are related to my dog, so I know I will have to advertize in a different location, just don't really know where to start.

Let your gut instinct guide you.

But if I wanted to breed a dog, I would find the best possible (beauty but most especially brains) female, and see about them being used as Service animals- what ones don't make the cut are placed in approved pet homes. Just an idea to think about.

I didn't mean anything bad with my first post. I just worry about all of the ones who can't find homes. Or the innocent puppies that get abused and neglected. My heart gets in the way of my head at times.

I don't know why I didn't think to tell you that before. The top breeds used for Service Dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers (another awesome breed), & German Shepherds.

Isn't sex with animals an abomination? And ... against the law in every state?

Phina, thank you for the information. I wondered about the age for a male, so I will wait and decide whether to breed him when he's 3. The breeder I got him from does keep in touch with the people that have bought puppies, and she has both parents who have good health, though I'm not sure about the health of earlier generations.

Yes, the health (such as the eyes, hip dysplasia, etc), would have to be checked into before any could ever be trained by a facility as Service animals.

Think about the risks your about to take. You might have a healthy k9, but what about the other owner? How many times has that k9 been used to breed. They retire females after a certain amount of litters.

Lets say you find the perfect match and have a wonderful litter of pups. Do you have buyers already? Lots of people can't afford AKC dogs. If you're working at a humane society, then you see all the dogs people can't afford anymore. Pets should be companions, not money making machines.

I have a 3 year pure breed AKC Merle Great Dane. This breed runs anywhere from $1300 to $5000 for a puppy. I adopted him this year for $100. I didn't have to get him fixed, but I did anyhow. There's so many pure breeds out there that need homes.

Ask yourself if this is something that really needs to be done? Jmo

Thank you,Reese, for your first post in this thread. Please,Op,dont breed that boy.Ill beg you on hands n knees in front of God n everybody.Im sure you have a fine animal, but just an akc purebred does not mean breeding quality and if youll walk through any pound on any day youll find a bunch of them awaiting adoptions that will never come.Fine dogs.Healthy dogs.Purebred and well behaved dogs. Please dont add to their numbers or keep them from getting adopted because someone chose to buy one of your pups.

Thank you, Autumn.
In my first post, I stated my view, and it hasn't changed. But I also gave her the Service Dog idea, because I had the feeling that she was determined to breed him anyway, and that option would at least be a worthwhile reason.

For myself, I will never purchase another dog. Why do so, when the pounds/ shelters/ humane societies are full?

As far as breeding, some people mistakenly believe that a female dog is better if bred once before having it spayed. If spayed before the first "heat", the chances of mammary tumors/cancer is down to about 0%.

With a male, if he is bred, that's all he thinks about from then on. Spaying and neutering at a young age makes for better dogs that are more family oriented.

Why would you want to breed your dog when there are thousands of them in the kill shelter? The ones that do not sell usually end up there or on the streets to starve to death, run over or killed in some other horrible way. For every puppy born many more are killed in the shelter. Plus I have picked up my share of full blooded breeds off the side of the highway, most still alive, barely. Not too long ago I picked up one big boy retriever at the sonic. He was sick and living off of what ever he could still from customers. So why would you want to breed and ad to the sluaghter?

For the love of God don't breed. There are millions of animals dating every day because of breeders. Goldens are very high the numbers in rescues are huge because they are so popular. A pet is not a means of A making money, if you volunteer at a humane society you should know that better than anyone. Yeah will only breed once but then the pups will breed and so on as it continues. Please don't do it.
