Am new to posting here. My husband was killed in a stupid accident in Aug 2011. Just last month I heard a song about driving his truck - I had to leave the location that the song was playing. I do drive his truck but hadn't really thought about the reason. The song - connected me to the reason and triggered so many emotions that I thought I had under control. Mostly that I wasn't there when it happened, helplessness, anger and just being without my touchstone, my gentle bear of a man who was always kind and full of laughter. I don't really have a question for here . . . just so much of my soul died too. I didn't even know it 'til I heard that song.

My partner of eight years passed away unexpectedly about 18 months ago. There are still some songs that I just cannot listen to (or even think about) because of the way they were part of us - good or bad. "This is Us" (Emmy Lou and Mark Knopfler)most Bruce Springsteen (he was more of a fan than I ever was) and "Loving Her Was Easier" - it came on one day and I mentioned how the line "wiping out the traces of the people and the places that I'd been" touched my heart. I don't think Kent realized how this made me feel but he just calmly said that had always been a special song to him and his ex wife - whew!
And then there is "Freebird" - I never cared for Skynyrd for a lot of reasons. Kent loved to dance and we practiced a lot of spins and twirls and stuff together at home - we were at a dance here in town with my sister and some other friends and he kept begging me to dance. The band was taking requests for a donation to the veterans fund - I told Kent if he requested a song I would dance with him so he requested "Freebird" - will always be the song we danced to in public.
I guess music was such a part of our lives that listening to many of the same songs alone kills my soul.

Yes there are some songs that bring out emotion. After 40 years of marriage when I hear some of those songs she comes right back to me as sweet memories. The songs are a connection to the past and those where good times. At first they kinda hurt because of the loss but now it's all good.

I met my husband in 1971 and I played the song "Close to You" by the Carpenters over and over because it reminded me of Steve. I was 15 and so madly in love with this blond, blue eyed 17 year old guy!!! 
I can't to this day listen to that song.

~~OP~~ There are many mental trigger points in the mind ... what you are expressing is not so much the song making you think but your subconscious releasing some hidden guilt within yourself over driving your husband's truck. No pun intended, but the song about driving the truck is just the mental vehicle for your guilt feelings.
Perhaps selling your husband's truck and getting a different vehicle will help you to deal with your guilt.

On our 25th wedding aniversary we danced to George Straights song I cross my heart. I still remember the words as we danced all alone in front of the crowd and I held her and kissed her. Yep some songs bring back good memories.

'Yep, songs, some movies.....sometimes I just feel the tears welling up. It's been over five years and it's better now, but I find that I'm a lot more emotional than I used to be. It doesn't even have to be anything that's related to any particular memories....it just seems to trigger the 'lost love' part of me, or maybe it just brings back the memories of what was, and is now gone...every now and then.

Wow and I thought I was the only one. For me it used to be my Maria by brooks n Dunn. Great to hear people's experiences and to know that I'm not the only one who gets over whelmed by certain songs.
I would also like to add that time and learning to love again has helped heal the wound inside my heart. I hate talking about this but maybe it might help someone as this thread has helped me. The thing I find most peculiar is shortly after she died all music became super hyper sensitive to my ears. The first time afterwards I heard stair way to heaven I lost it completely and I noticed a trend of only listening to upbeat positive music couldn't deal with images of death violence or hatred.

A lot of music reminds me of my late husband. However I chose to play music he liked at his funeral versus the traditional church music. Now when I hear those songs on the radio I tear up. When I called my kids to tell them that their father passed, it was later in the evening and they had left the hospital, we didnt think he was going to pass so soon... Anyways the kids said when they got in the truck to come back to the hospital the song I'll be missing you, the remake done by puff daddy, was playing when they started the truck. It freaked them all out, but they insisted that it was played at his funeral. We all get emotional when we hear it now.

As soon as I heard that song I knew that it was exactly how I felt.
My husband's old mud truck was the only thing the kids ask me not to sell.
Many times I have just sat in that truck and thought of him.
I hardly ever go to the grave because I don't fell his memories there.
I can look at the truck and smile everytime.

This clip makes me cry every time I see it. At first, with sadness, then with fondness of all the pleasant memories and adventures that we shared together. Carl and Ellie's marriage were very similar to ours. We had no kids either (same reason) but we had each other and we often acted like kids together. My adventure lasted 26 years. I'm hoping for another adventure eventually.

My husband's favorite song was "Softly, I Will Leave You Softly" written about someone who didn't want to die in front of his wife/lover so he passed away while she was sleeping.
Ironically, Jim passed away quite suddenly while on a business trip to Dallas and died in a hospital there. I was not notified until after he was gone.
Sometimes I turn that song on and play it over and over and just let the tears all come out and get it over with, even though it has almost been three years since he passed away.
Josh Groban's "To Where You Are" is pretty intense too.
