I've been an Emergency Room Nurse for 3 1/2 years and a cardiac nurse for 3 1/2 years before that. I was also a Paramedic for five years. I just applied for my current position but I think my previous experience gave me a leg up.

May 2014 (but there is a slight possibility that I'll jump right into a RN-to-BS after I take the summer off to secure a job)

I start my psych rotation on Monday. Not sure if I'm looking forward to it or scared to death. LOL

Why don't you look at a transition to RN program and open the door for a few more options? You can be doing any prereq classes at your own pace and often online (though I think the in-person classes are often less time consuming).

The two men in my last rotation got to spend a day "shadowing" in ICU and absolutely loved the fast pace of that floor. I shadowed on the oncology floor and really like the mellower pace (many patients were more long term or repeat visitors so you got to know them and their families).

Our clinical instructor must have been a bit ADHD in that she had worked almost every unit in the hospital. When she gets bored, she just changes units. (She was absolutely awesome).

Do you have all your prereq classes...the non-nursing ones?...because summer offers a chance to start earlier...or even peek at a few classes you might need if you decide to keep going for that BS (that opens even more doors) later on. I'm taking an additional psych class with that BS in mind. And hoping that when I switch clinicals to Med/Surg mid-semester it won't be too much.

I now see you are looking at a BS program...good for you. However, you might be able to get into a spring program at a local community or junior college and just work on those additional non-nursing classes. Be checking out the deadlines for applying to the nursing programs...they can be extremely inconvenient and make you wait a while if you miss them. If you are serious, go visit a counselor as soon as possible and just find out what is the best plan. You don't have to register or anything to do this. Just make sure your bring any transcripts you have.

I am a retired nurse that have seen many changes in LTC. It is an extremely challenging field if you work in a rehab facility. It is no longer just the minor skills that nurses are able to do. Many times patients come in after surgery. Sometimes within a day or so of surgeries depending on type.

IVs, wound care and those tend to form prior to admission to facility. TPN which at one time was done more in the hospitals.

My nursing was both LTC and psych. Good luck on your search.

i like rehab but hopefully I won't have to do regular LTC ever, I don't like snf. I think rehab or neuro would be good...

little secret...www.indeed.com....positions galore.

you may not be as 'limited' as you think. L.P.N.'s are utilized in every aspect of health care, where 'skills' are needed.

your never just an L.P.N. I went for my R.N. in the 90's, a 1 year articulation program, but began as an L.P.N. I still say to this day, I'd rather have a darn good L.P.N. care for me than an R.N. who thinks they know it all. I think an L.P.N., a good one, is much more vocation oriented....sorry fellow rn's.

a possible consideration is dialysis. Either a clinic or working for a mobile company where you go into contracted hospitals.

I saw a lot of men entering this field, i tried it for 1 year, as an LPN....wasn't for me. long hours, but back then at 150/per treatment, and up to 3 treatments per day....you do the math. I had young children at home, and couldn't keep up with the hours.

best wishes!!!

this is ridiculous! I just tried Davidson community college because they have a local online lpn to adn option and they require one year of FACILITY experience. I've worked primarily clinic and home health. I've filled in on facility and group home. What's with the discrimination towards home health and clinic nursing? Is my license not good enough? Is it not the same?

It probably has something to do with them being responsible for your nursing skills when they give you the degree. It isn't a reflection of your personal nursing skills but rather a reflection of those who went before you. I am not sure where you would get your assessment and medication administration skills doing online only? I would think you would want clinical and lab experiences to practice and learn these skills. It only takes a year "in person" and you get to experience a wide variety of nursing experiences so that you have a better idea of what nursing suits you. I am also using my clinicals as a chance to build relationships so that when I do apply for a job, I am not just a name on a resume.

I am currently doing my psych rotation at a psych hospital and like it enough I am considering applying for a patient care specialist so that I have a work history established with them before I even graduate.

yeah true. They do have clinical rotations even if its online. Which as we all can attest clinicals as a nursing student are tantamount to babysitting patients instead of actually providing real care most of the time...

I don't know about your clinicals but I am providing "real care" and have only made it through fundamentals. I spent 8 weeks on a step-down from ICU floor. I have assisted with placing a nasogastric tube, tube feeding, assisted with some pretty nasty wound care, turned very ill patients until I am an expert, managed two patients at the same time and emptied a colonoscopy bag. Learned how to keep a patient from vomiting by teaching relaxation techniques, cared for a patient actively dying, identified and started oxygen on a patient in distress, learned how to recognize a heart murmur, removed IV catheters (okay, not a big deal), and I'm one of the few on my floor who has not placed a foley catheter yet. I managed c.diff. on a schizophrenic/bipolar mentally deficit man. This was in addition to daily, head-to-toe assessments, VS, and AM care. I have been responsible for the managing the care for 12 different patients except for passing meds. (Which I am now qualified to do and will be able to manage IV bags and saline locks at the end of the week.) I am only 3 weeks into my second semester of nursing. I don't remember anything that looked anything remotely like babysitting. I sat down at lunch and that was it (and usually panicked about wasting time because I needed to be gathering information to complete my 20 some page careplans.)

I have worked home health, MD office, NH, hospital, LTC, insurance, case management, procedural centers, practice management, and travel nursing, so I have experience in almost every aspect of nursing. No offense taken, I know I am just a "baby" nurse...however, the things I described are not "babysitting" but we learning to use real nursing skills. Like I said before, I'm guessing that the requirement for faculty experience is probably based on them being responsible for your skills when you graduate and they have had bad experiences in the past. I know we aren't allowed to even have a bottle of water on our desk because one year some students wrote the answers on the inside of the labels...

I like my clinical nursing instructors so far. They are hard but they also have a teaching spirit and are just preparing us to be reasonably competent when we show up to our first day as a "real" nurse. So far, all our instructors actually LIKE being nurses...not necessarily the same experience with some of the staff nurse I've encountered. The more skills I learn while I still have the option of having someone standing behind me talking me through the procedures, the better off I'll be in the end.

I guess you are smarter than me (and I have a BS in Medical Engineering). I am completely exhausted trying to absorb the material we are given in the limited time we are given it. Just recognizing the best (not the easiest) Nanda is still a challenge and memorizing all the drugs, SE, & therapeutic dosages maxes my brain out. I am so extremely grateful I didn't try to find a one year accelerated program like I considered at one time. They do exist if you want to pursue it.

Well, off to clinicals. I was up until 3am getting my case study and care plan completed so this could be an interesting day. However, this is "only" psych so I shouldn't be a patient risk. I'm hoping that we spend more day in lecture or observing today because I doubt that I'm the only slightly foggy one there.

Worked out just fine until I stopped working to be a full-time mom 16 years ago. Technology has changed enough that it is now obsolete. I decided that nursing would be more "mom" friendly than updating that career. I still have some interest and might see if I can nurse on the research and development side of implantable medical devices.

yeah with your background I could see it happening... I wish I would have gotten experience in another field before going into this one. Gives you perspective and a legit career to fall back on besides Starbucks...

Luv the versatility that a career in nursing offers...Did 5yrs critical care b4 taking a traveling contract for a cpl....Ended up locally in LTC management due to the appeal of allowing my family to take presidence. Sometime miss the fun of CCU/ICU/ER, but ultimately this allows me to be a single mom 1st n foremost....plus I luv my humble lil home Im Director at

I've been a nurse practitioner for 30 yrs, manager of a CCU unit dealing primarily with post op open hearts. I did a stint in the cath lab/IR. Now I've down sized to Case management and I love it!

I'm a hospice nurse and I love it but its not for everyone. It's very rewarding but can be at times very emotionally draining at times. If you are looking into hospice as your career choice I suggest a good background in med surg because you are on your own out there and don't have easy access to back up most times if things go haywire

I work on the administrative side of nursing at a managed care company; I worked in the clinical setting and currently have my BSN, MBA, CCM as well as a health information management degree. Basically we review cases and approve in patient admissions and home health care visits; many nurses don't realize the opportuity. Entry level positions exisit and they offer training; some of these positions may fall under the following titles: Utilization Review associate;Utilization review nurse; case manager; Utilization management nurse; UM coordinator; these jobs are usually Monday-Friday with weekends and holidays off. Just do a search for health insurance company nursing jobs in your area. Aetna hires LPNs.Good luck

Ive been a nurse now since April 05,was a Cna for 3 years before that all in long term care. I wouldnt have it anyother way. At times the challenges are difficult though. When your a Charge Nurse of >50 residents and have 3 cnas to babysit and keep in line, sometimes you question your career choice.
