I had once thought it possible, but common shares of Apple only yield $10.60:

Yahoo! Finance – Mon, Mar 19, 2012

Now that Apple (AAPL) has decided to make a dividend payment for the first time in more than a decade, we wanted to see who stands to benefit the most from the iPhone maker's decision to give back some of its $98 billion in cash.

The company said Monday that it plans to buy back some $10 billion in stock and pay $2.65 on each of its shares every quarter. Assuming it does send those dividends out and it stays at that rate, that would equate to a payout of $10.60 a year on each of its shares. That's quite a sum. Apple has nearly 932.4 million shares outstanding, meaning that roughly $9.9 billion in dividends would be paid annually.

By selective choices, you can expect a consistent return of around 5% today from stock dividends. For diversity, you should also hold some bonds and preferred stocks. Bonds are a problem today in that finding anything with a reasonable yield and not a high risk is impossible. In a good economy, you should be able to establish a diverse portfolio that returns 6-8%. Note with APPL at $500/share, their dividend is only about 2%.

If you own an incredible amount of dividend paying stocks! There are some high paying dividend stocks out there, but you have to research the companies. Not all of them can sustain such high payouts.

It's simple math.....divide, amount you need to live by the dividend of the desired stock or mutual fund. The capital is the problem for most people, then the taxes etc...there are many ways to go about it
