Hi Everyone. Just checking in. Well, it's been close to 5 1/2 years now. I check in and read the forums regularly, but sometimes I need to just kind of step back a little because I find that reading too many of the posts from those who are recently widowed sometimes seems to just 'refresh' those nightmare memories for me. I do understand that they are the ones who need support and encouragement the most right now, but even after as long as it's been, I still find myself still struggling to 'move forward' with my own life, and sometimes it seems like the years are just flying away...and I'm not a spring chicken anymore , even though I'm healthy and able (so far).
Anyway....since I've lost all interest in the hobbies that I used to love, I've found a new one (well, not that new, I've always liked it). I've been working on my back-packing gear. I'm going camping..in the winter...not the way I would like to, because I don't think it's safe for a woman alone to go too far off the beaten path like I would like to, so I'll go to a rustic campground. I got a little four season tent, etc., so it should be fine. Here on the S.W. Pacific coast our weather isn't real extreme, except for the rain Can you tell that I'm getting 'cabin fever' ?

My house is filling up again....I don't think there has ever been a time when someone hasn't been living with us. My Grand-daughters friend moved into one room. My daughter and her new husband are getting ready to move in at the end of the month....which is fine, because I have four bedrooms and it would be really stupid for me to live here all by myself. They don't have to pay rent, but they will carry their weight as far as utilities, groceries, etc. Yippee..they can take care of the house, chickens, yard, repairs, etc., while I go camping They all work, but they can figure it out. I'm thinking maybe sometime next week will be a good time to go. I'm kind of excited, and I'm getting all of my gear that will fit into one really big backpack. I've had too many years of taking everything but the kitchen sink camping, and I'm really looking forward to going lighter.
I'll paint, read, cook on the camp-fire, listen to the river while I'm sleeping....maybe I'll just make my bed in the car in case of bears or cougars. Last time I went camping I did that, because the coyotes were howling really close. My little dogs kept really quiet too because they sensed the danger. I slept better in the car. I plugged my little DVD player in and watched movies .
There aren't any coyotes here, but lots of bears and cougars.
On the other hand...I could just camp in the woods behind my house. It's really pretty there, with lots of Myrtle-wood trees and ever-greens, and ferns, lots of deers. Plenty of water too, and I can have a big camp-fire this time of year. Yeah, that's what I'll do, I think I'll start setting it up tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it goes. I'm learning some new ways of starting fires, new fire-pits, and new recipes that I'm anxious to try. I'll take my dutch oven up there and cook something really good. I want to make some bannock bread on a stick. I'll post and let y'all know how it's going.

That sounds like it'll be great.

I admire your ambition in doing it. I've camped out only twice in my life, and only with someone who was very experienced at it. I enjoyed it but would never consider doing it alone.

There are many things that even though I have more experience at it, I doubt I'd do alone. More so not because I'm afraid, but I don't have the ambition or gumption or motivation to get myself up and doing it.

So I admire that in you.

I think it might be a very profoundly moving experience.

I want to be nice here and just caution you about carrying too much weight and falling. Our old bones don't heal well so don't hurt yourself.

You're just saying that because you're so young I won't carry more than I can.....because I can't. Actually, I'm pretty sturdy...even when I'm out of shape, and I'm always careful because I don't like to be hurt. Seriously, I know what you're saying, but our bodies let us know what we can and can't do. I'm still working on loading my back-pack. I loaded it once and could barely lift it to get it on (it's big)...so I have to thin down more and keep it under 30 or so lbs. Dang, I really wanted to take my cast iron skillet, and that 'heavy' army shovel, but I think they will have to stay. Can't wait, there's nothing I like more than hearing the pitter-patter of rain on the tent. Snug like a bug in a rug Thanks for the thoughtful reminder, and as always, I will be careful. Shari
