i am on a dating website and met a military guy that says his name was owen he was looking for someone to marry so we talked for awhile and he seemed honest and he asked me for some money for kids and he would pay me back. it went from 800. and after i sent that it went to 1500. i told him i couldnt send it he was ok with it. then he started talking about hitting me in the head with a brick and for me to watch my back so i broke it off with him. i am a vet so i went to the ft jackson base and showed them picts and his info they claimed he didnt exist. he told me that he told his captain and he made it look like he didnt exist cause he is over in africa rt now. has anyone run into this and what did u do

You are 38, military or not, ( like that somehow makes you wiser.  ) and you didn't smell a scam? You sent the money, you got scammed, lesson learned.

This reminds me of that commercial with the girl talking to her friend and waiting to meet her french model that she met on the internet and claiming one can't tell a lie on the internet. The expression on her face when her french model walked up was priceless.

Yep you been scammed. First place someone in the Military would not have asked you for money. There is alot of that going on and these men and women are not even in the US. They are not even in the military. This has been going on for several years. Sorry to say you learn a hard lesson. NEVER NEVER EVER SEND MONEY.

How many times is this same old story going to get repeated? Anybody willing to send money to somebody they met on the internet who asks for it deserves to get fleeced! Soldiers get paid.Soldiers (active duty) have ID cards, they have COs and they have units.Determining if some poser is actually in the military is easier today than making biscuits! Jeezus...

i did it cause he has kids we talked on the phone and everything. my mom kicked me out at 15 yrs old cause i caught her cheating i hv struggled most of my life. i cant stand to see anyone much less kids struggle. i believed thats what God wanted me to do. i hv a hrt of gold and try to do gd for all kind of ppl i dont really know. thats who i am. some of u think i was stupid and yeah maybe i was but i had gd intentions when i did it. yes i was in the military and i saw how much got covered up for soldiers who killed their own family or kids the military protects alot of their soldiers...i know that for a fact cause i worked in top secret.

How would $800 stop the kids from struggling? What exactly did they need? Next time, if you feel the need to help, offer to send them the clothes or pay the fee directly so that you know it actually goes to the kids...or better yet, offer to research organizations that will help them long-term.
(And don't "date" ... real or theoretical date ... men who already can't even afford the kids they got. They don't have the money to be dating...they should using their spare time to get a part-time job to actually support them.)

What relevance does your security clearance have to you being this gullible?
Just a FYI - service members don't need help on the Internet. The service takes care of their own. Military installations have food banks and short term loan agreements with the agency that pays their wage.
I call bullshit. If you were really former military you would know all of this.
