Border Collies are considered one of the smartest dog breeds around. They excel at herding sheep and can learn voice commands, follow directions from a whistle or hand signals, and can understand more words than most dogs. Border Collies are smart, but just how smart are they?

The Border Collie sits at the top of the list of most intelligent dog breeds, and some people believe they are the smartest dog in the world. This is a dog who will keep his owner on their toes, especially if they don't research the breed before getting one. Border Collies require a lot of exercise, and need to do a job to stay out of trouble. A bored Border Collie is capable of almost anything, because he will find something to do to entertain himself.

This is a dog breed that never stops thinking and has the ability to stay one step ahead of his owner. You can practically see the wheels turning in his head as he searches his environment and notices everything going on around him. If you take the time, this dog can learn almost anything you want to teach him and he thrives on learning. A Border Collie needs plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise to keep his mind and body in good shape. Just be careful what you do teach him, because he won't easily forget and he may use his intelligence to teach himself things you don't want him to learn.

Australian Shepherd, Beagle, Border Collie, and/or Coon Hounds. Even a few mutts.

Hard to decide! Spent time on my grandparents farms growing up. These are some of the ones they, my uncles and aunts, their neighbors, and my family have had.

I think it all depends on what your wanting in a Farm dog. I like Aussies but some tend to have the Assie version of ADD lol. I lean more to Border Collies, Border crosses and something with a touch of wolf.

Cur dogs get used a lot in the area for watching their Horses and Cows but I also see quit a few down here that use them for hog hunting, especially Cur/Pit crosses are good for Chase. Now the thing is many have learned it is a good idea to have some versatility with their dogs and will have an Assie or 2 and maybe a Border Collie as well for watching things. Each breed has it's good points and bad, so you have to find what works for you best, what might work for your neighbor might not work for you.

I went out on a whim and am trying to see how a combo will work for herding and watch duties by crossing my Border Shepherd (Half Assie, Half Border Collie) with a small Husky Wolf Hybrid that showed more husky than anything. It should help with stamina and a few other things that I liked in both. We have a real problem with Coyotes in our area and the occasional other critter you really don't want around that likes nabbing your chickens, ducks and such. They both hated Coyotes so I'll see how that turns out in a few months.

If you using them hunting as well you have to take a whole lot more into consideration because some breeds simply don't do well being around smaller animals like chickens and such. For instance it's not a good idea to have a lab around you birds because to most they look like a good dinner to chase! The same goes for a number of breeds.

I figured since I found this forum I'd drop a post and say Hi. Wish all the best of luck on your farm dog choices!

Hey I saw a dog the other day I figured that might be worth mentioning. The Dog was a German Shepherd and Cur Cross. Man it looked just like a Blue Healer but a lot taller, I bet that mix would make an awesome farm work dog with the right discipline! I still kinda think it's funny that a lot of people have forgotten that German Shepherds were originally breed to be farm work dogs not guard dogs etc. All that changed thanks to WWII and the almost eradication of them.

My old dawg Angel was part black lab and part Blue Healer.Boy could she herd. She was good natured until she died, but if anything appeared to be threatening she will let you know about it and even kept wolves out of the house when the door blew open from not being properly latched. She stood in the open door fiercly guarding and alertting the house. Those two on the steps and two in the yard ran like heck and jumped the fence when I came to back her up with the old ax handle I was swingin' at them.

cool story. I don't live on a farm yet. Out here neighbors bought Akitas to keep bears away. I was hoping someone would say lab. I had a Border Collie that was decapitated and skinned. When I reported it to Sheriff's Dept. they said it was ritualistic.

Amen to that. I've always had Border Collies they are The Einstein of dogs.
I have a purebred black/white Border collie a lil over 2yrs old. I'm constantly teaching him new things & his brain is ALWAYS ticking on learning stuff. He loves to herd & is a go getter about it. Plus loves his toys too and after working or playing he's in the house with me. Perfect house manners even if I take him to other's homes. Doesn't mess with anything that isn't his. Gets along good with my cat but he does want to herd her much to her dismay. He catches on lightning fast & love seeing his brain ticking. Of course I work with him all time, he just amazes me sometimes.

I will say 1 thing...they are Not for the average dog owner, you have to know how the breed operates. Ever BC I've owned has had some quirks they are obsessed with which just makes them more interesting.

I even have a handmade wooden sign with a Border collie on it and written under it it says...If it ain't a Border Collie...then its just a dawg.

Ive had Border Collies for years..when I was working cattle..

BUt I no longer do that..

I LOVE LOVE LOVE..ANATOLIAN SHEPHERDS....THEY ARE THE BEST EVER FAMILY PET..AND WATCH DOG...

THEY ARE TURKISH LIVESTOCK GUARD DOGS FROM THE ANATOLIAN PLANES IN TURKEY..Having many of them is considered as having great wealth by shepherds in Turkey

We bought two and named them Turner and Hooch...Turner had a car crash..and passed away.

My dog HOOCH..was big like this one(that man is rather short).... He was purebred Anatolian Shepherd

THESE BIG DOGS ARE JUST LIKE 'MOTHERS'...they mother every small creature..they are the most loving dogs ever...BUT THEY NEVER FORGET EITHER LIKE ELEPHANTS...if someone abuses them..they wont forget..and they dont forgive either..lol.Im speaking of friends and strangers that might come over...If they do anything abusive..they are never welcome again...and they remember both friends..and enemies..

MY LAST ANATOLIAN WAS MIXED WITH PYRANESE...His coat was more dense..than the purebred...It was almost wool like feeling..

HIS NAME WAS 'BIG FOOT'...he was a beauty..and had the Anatolian Mothering Instinct..

My Aussie Border b*tch that I bred..had pups...She was like a teenager..She would come and feed them..and leave the pups with BIG FOOT...He loved the puppies more than mommma

He would take them for walks in the fields...the calves would come up to a put...Big Foot would GENTLY make it known to the calf he was not to get close to the pups...

Then off he would trot with his big tail circled over his back...with 6 little pups trotting in a straight line behind him.. It was the cutest thing ever..

They live in fields with sheep....they dont have shelter, they prefer to be where the livestock is...as their coat is quite thick with a dense undercoat..

THE SHEEP WILL FOLLOW THE DOG..THEY HAVE LEARNED TO TRUST HIM

NOTE THE TYPICAL ANATOLIAN CURLED TAIL
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog (Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Çoban Köpegi, Coban Kopegi, Anatolian Shepherd) his history goes back more than 3000 B.C

Standard Poodle mixed with Lab.

I had a pure bred standard poodle, Very smart, quick learner... But he only wanted to do things that were good for him. Very narcissistic.

Then I got a standard poodle crossed with a lab. (yes, some call them Labradoodles, I just can't.) He is super smart and wants to do nothing but please. He will do anything I ask.

He is trained by hand signals and some voice commands.

He did the cutest thing ever when he was about 8 months old.
I have a very old small chihuahua named token. The nightly routine; I ask Token if he wants to go to bed? I give him the choice of staying on the dog bed in front of the fire or I carry him (he can't climb the stairs) up to my room. If he wants to go upstairs he will get up and follow me to the stairs.

One night, He stayed on the dog bed. At about 3am I partially woke to Token crying. Then a few minutes I hear him cry again. I get up and go down the stairs to find Token has climbed up 3 steps and is too scared to keep going and too scared to go back down. "Happy" the poodle x lad had taken all of his toys and stuffed animals and put them all around Token.
*Don't cry my little buddy, You can have my toys.*

Dogs are the only creatures on earth that love us more than they love themselves.

Black & tan hound. Grew up with one that protected the cows and us.
One day my sister and I was cutting across the hay field when he flew up out of nowhere and knocked my sister down. He then picked up a rattle snake that was right in front of her and slung it. Even if we did not see him he was still watching over us. He would walk us to school bus and be waiting when we got back. He had the sweetest mouth when treeing. It would give you chills.

If I had a good b*tch ... I'd start kenneling Dalmations for barn 'companion' wokers.

But baring that ... a pure bred Jack Russel b*tch can be a fearless in every situation.
