Great topic!
We train several personal/ executive protection dogs each year. And set up a maintenance program .
What I tell my clients is a dog is only a layer of a well planned security program. Any dog will act as a visual deterrent. But with out extensive training for both dog and handler the dog by itself is very limited. And a fully trained dog in the hands of a uneducated handler its not only useless but may also be a hindrances.
Secured perimeter, cameras, learned self defence tactics, concealed Cary permit(a true must. )and common sense are all things that should go with having a pp dog.
With or with out a dog, everyone should have a fire arm.

Ive seen Sholoh attack 1 time...I still gasp at awareness of just how fast he can and will inflict a LOTTA damage upon an assailant's person... and proud of being confident that A]He will keep me safe and B]Will release instantly upon command...makes my gsds look slow and awkward....I assure you,neither are.Mostly I rely on the dogs for their awareness and as a visual deterant...I will allow my dogs to do their jobs but if it's feasible, rather than put them at any risk,I'm more apt to shoot a perp...

My house sitter has two poms but I have a lot of firepower to back then up
If you are talking about the Zimmerman deal, the kid was bad druggie etc, no dog would have helped that.

I have both, light shot guns and Import German Shepherds. The line is from Mittlewest German Shepherds. My dogs can hear and smell trouble a mile away from my estate.

and a .38 revolver.
Have always liked dogs, not so guns - but in this day and age things change. I have never liked the idea of guns or wanted to have one. However, after my house was invaded by 3 young worthless punks I felt violated and so I wrestled with the idea of to own a gun or not someone said something quite simple that made sense to me.
BETTER to have one and not need it then NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT.

Hmmm, how about both? If my trained shepherds don't get you first. I believe that to be the case. Have you ever seen a two legged human out run a 4 legged animal? Not with german shepherds.

I have never owned a gun. Over the years, my dogs, -- a Chow, Mastiff X Pit Bull, Doberman X Greyhound and 2 Chihuahuas were my security. They lived both indoors and outdoors (via doggie door). The 2 small dogs would alert the big dogs and the big dogs would do their job. They were all rescues and took it upon themselves to protect me and my property. My only female who was a Chihuahua X Jack Russell was the alpha. As a single woman, I have never had a home invasion, been attacked, or scared in the comfort of my home with my faithful protective dogs. I have even rescued retired ex Govt., K-9 working dogs.
My Chow bit many people who dared come close to my home and/or myself, and I have paid (under the table) the very people he bit. The other 2 big dogs have only ripped a couple of men's jeans who have approached me while my dogs and I were out on our daily walks.
The hardest part of being a loving pet owner is watching my dogs die of old age. Heartbreaking. I miss each and everyone of them dearly.  
OP I love Rottweilers, they are are so majestic like all German breeds. My Doberman had an arrogant look but he had the guts and stamina to back it up.. You are lucky to have both.

I envy you - the area I live in is definitely not the place to be if the worst should happen. As we saw during Hurricane Katrina, all bets are off and everyone is frozen in place - nobody going out or in - I would be very sad and scared to face something like that on my own. I would want to be with my children but in all likelihood it would be impossible.

I have a bow to protect my family. My dog qualifies as family to me so she is in mind with perfection not the form of protection. as for Florida I don't know what even you are speaking of but it will boil down to someone trigger happy, someone without training or someone doing something they should to be looking down the barrel.

Because I am a dog trainer, I do train my personal dogs, who have the right temperament for it, in some personal protection. However, I use them as a deterrent, not my sole means of protection.

I have a .357 revolver. I like to travel and don't want to bother others to take care of a security dog. I would not like it if I had a dog that barked all of the time like my neighbor's dog.

My security dog is the silent driveway monitor in my yard and vehicle, if either "Start Barking" I grab my 3 inch magum 12 gage auto

Certain breeds are banned from apartments and close living communities.
The key word is "properly trained". There are many people who claim to be trainers that don't have the skill to train security dogs. Even some police dogs have turned vicious.
Too many dogs are bred and trained to be aggressive and end up killing their owners, neighborhood children, elderly etc. If the breed requires exercise and challenges but is only left in the house or yard to protect, it will become aggressive. There is no guarantee this dog would actually protect you. On America's Most Wanted, she had three large dogs but the intruder still entered and killed her.
