I love working and spending time in Litchfield County. I work at a library in the county and I plan to move there when I buy a house. I'm strongly considering buying a home in the Northfield village section of Litchfield.
I enjoy visiting the Lourdes of Litchfield Shrine in Litchfield. I attend outdoor mass there in the summer and visit the grounds throughout the year. It's a good place to pray and reflect. I also enjoy nature by hiking at places such as White Memorial, Topsmead State Park, Burr Pond State Park, and Mt. Tom State Park. I try to hike up Bear Mountain, the highest peak in CT, once a year. Torrington has nice restaurants like Scarpelli's where you get plenty of food for what you pay. At Scarpelli's you only pay 10 dollars for Italian meatloaf with ziti or mashed potatos, a side order of your choice (green beans, apple sauce, etc.), and a soup or salad. That can't be said of many restaurants today.
Litchfield County is filled with natural beauty and it's a peaceful place with very little crime. The fall foliage is incredible and there are hiking opportunities throughout the county. To me, Litchfield County seems like a piece of Vermont in Connecticut!

Waterbury gets alot of snow too. And your narrow hilly streets are difficult to plow. Yes, Litchfield County gets alot of snow but it's pretty. You can go cross country skiing at places like White Memorial and Topsmead in Litchfield.

Western New England always tends to get more snow than the southeastern parts of New England. So western Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and the whole state of Vermont always get more snow than eastern Connecticut, eastern Massachusetts (I grew up in Randolph, a suburb of Boston), and Rhode Island. When I moved to Naugatuck from Massachusetts in 2006, it took some adjusting but now I'm used to it.
When I move to Northfield, I'll be ready for the snow. I'll be sure to buy a snowblower (now I live in an apartment complex where the shoveling and plowing is done for us).

I agree. Litchfield County reminds me of Massachusetts's Berkshire County. I've gone kayaking on the Bantam River at White Memorial and also on the lake at Burr Pond State Park. Nice places!

Bartholemew Cobble is nice. I know it's in Massachusetts but it's right on the Connecticut line bordering North Caanan, CT in Litchfield County. It's a nice place for hiking and you can dip your kayak in the nearby Housantonic River. Kayaking the Housatonic in Massachusetts and Connecticut is a pleasant experience.

Mohawk State Forest and Mohawk Mountain in Goshen is neat too. Only a few miles outside of Torrington. Very easy to get to.

Lake Waramaug and Twin Lakes are excellent lake areas for swimming, boating, and fishing in Lithcfield County.

Litchfield County is the area of Connecticut that has the lowest crime rate. It's the safest place to be in Connecticut. You don't have to worry about shootings like in Waterbury, Hartford, Bridgeport, or New Haven. You also don't have to worry about dealing with drug addicts like in Willimantic, New London, Norwich, Meriden, or Ansonia.

I'll be kayaking on the Houstatonic River on Saturday. I'll start off at a point in Sheffield, MA and make my way down into Salisbury. Plus, there will be bagpipes playing at Bartholewmew's Cobble just across the state line from North Caanan, CT. Lots of fun!

What's Tolland County like? I've driven through on I-84 when I go back to Massachusetts to visit family. I do notice it's heavily forested as I drive on I-84 through Stafford Springs and Union.

Haystack Mountain in Norfolk. Campbell Falls on the Norfolk/Mass. border is beautiful too.
And the center of Norfolk is so historically interesting looking! It has a 19th century feeling to it!

I haven't been up to Leatherman's Cave since I was 11 years old, but I plan to hike up to Leatherman's Cave again either this spring or summer.
I wish I had been alive when the Leatherman used to travel through Litchfield County in the 19th century. I would have loved to have met him.

This place I'm going to mention is actually in northern Fairfield County but close to Litchfield County: Putnam Memorial State Park in Bethel/Redding.
It is the site of "Connecticut's Valley Forge", a place where Israel Putnam and his soldiers along with other Patriot soldiers from New England and New York who spent a winter encampment there. There are historical markers, trails, a visitors center, and a museum there. It sounds pretty cool especially if you're a Revoltuionary War buff!
I've lived in Connecticut for 40 years but never visited Putnam Memorial State Park!
So this year in 2015, I plan to visit this wonderful Connecticut Revolutionary War site!
