The more important question is why and who. Ink will be with you your whole life. Your first one should mean something to you. Also please find a reputable shop and an artist that you can easily get comfortable with

Before making your mind up I suggest going to several tattoo shops and observe how the staff operates does he observe blood borne pathogens safety , us of autoclave sterilization, or go with disposable tubes and needles is the shop clean throughout.? As far as your first design? Don't pick a piece of flash off the wall.l

Getting a tattoo is a very personal thing. If you are unsure about what to get, or where to get it, I would say you are not ready for one yet. If you want to experiment, try temporary ones, or have an artistic friend draw on you with a Sharpie marker.

Thank you all for your advice. It is all well said and hits straight at the heart of my dilemma.
I am not sure if I will get a tat, nor what or where to place it ... but at my age, having a tat and working in the public are no problem for me.
I am still considering my alternatives, but I thank you all for voicing your opinions.

Choosing your tattoo is really something you'll have to decide yourself.....as far as where I would start with one of the less sensitive areas......back shoulder, wrist or side of the theigh. Then you will be more comfortable when you get your second one......But most important of all is the status of the shop you goto. To find out more about a certain shop you can go online to your states health department and see if the shop has any complaints.....ie....infection reports, failed inspections, sterilization failures.....ect....

Thanks everyone -- for all your advice. I have been scared off from getting a tattoo for myself.
My grandson, who has several from a reputable artisan, developed a horrible staph infection on his upper arm from his latest tat. Looked like his arm was going to rot off. He is better now after medical treatment but he is saying he will not get any more tats.
Does staph infection occur often after getting a tat? (new, packaged needles, sanitation cleansing was exceptional, personal hygiene of the "inker" was immaculate. Can't imagine why this infection happened.
