So, I live on the side of a shale hill, and have been doingall sorts of things to try and keep the little bit of dirt that I have from being washed away and growing flowers that I love so much this discussion is intended for low budget ideas.

One thing I do is set up concrete blocks with small rocks in bottom (or clay for plants that like wet/moist soil) and use them as ground boxes: the block helps hold erosion from taking my hill with it, while allowing a planter that doesn't lose dirt every time it rains.. I hate shale

plant mosses (extensive rooting systems) ~~ seedum is excellent ground cover
Contact your local extension office for various kinds of planting in your area which will thrive and reproduce year after year. (Many extension offices can also refer you to local residents who will share their plantings (cuttings) with you.)

I put some in this year, although they did not flower, they did take off quite well in the shady areas.

Wait a year or 2 you'll wish you
didn't plant them. They spread like fire.
I had cut them with my mower n they still
don't die.

They are a taproot, like a carrot, you have to get the whole thing. My advice: rototiller and landscape fabric.

They're hens & chicks -- always have been.
Seedum is a good ground cover for poor ground ... hosta ... plant some jonquil bulbs ... pampas grass .......... all will act as a barrier against soil erosion
