'Battletoads' and 'Ninja Gaiden II'. Took me years to finish those games. 'Ninja Gaiden' didn't have a save option or warp zones. You had to play it through.

'Battletoads' and 'Ninja Gaiden II'. Took me years to finish those games. 'Ninja Gaiden' didn't have a save option or warp zones. You had to play it through.
Holy crap, you actually beat "Battletoads?" If so, you're officially the first person I've ever met who has.
My buddy's been playing the original "Ninja Gaiden" for twenty-five years and he still can't beat the damn thing. Level 6-3 is impossible. The sequels are just as hard.

The hardest level was the second to last. The spinning gyros. Like any other game, you had to learn the pattern.
'Ninja Gaiden II', the final boss had three stages. I beat that game once and never played again. I wanted to end on a high note.

I'm still pissed I was never able to beat "Blaster Master." I got to the final boss a few times, came close to beating him once, and then kicked the bucket and was out of continues. So lame.
"Ghosts N' Goblins" also tops the list of the hardest games ever. Seriously, f**k that game.

'Ghosts N' Goblins' was a b*tch! Never finished it.
'Friday the 13th' took twenty years to figure out. You have to light all of the fireplaces in the large cabins. Once you do that, you receive the torch weapon. It totally destroys Jason.
'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'.
Never beat it. I did watch a, walk through, video on YouTube.
No way! That guy had the patience of of Job.
He admitted that the game was one of the most difficult games, ever!

I finally beat "Ghosts 'N Goblins" (or so I thought) just to be informed that I had to do the entire game over again to get the blue shield needed to actually complete the game. Talk about a royal b*tch. When you finally beat the game for real, it simply says, "CONGRATURATION. THIS STORY IS HAPPY END." Wonkiest game ending ever.
"Battletoads" was just way too hard. I rarely even made it passed the speed bike stage (level three, if I recall) because I'd get too frustrated. Anybody who's beaten that game is a f**king gaming wizard who I humbly bow down to!

Besides the obligatory old school games like Ninja Gaiden?!
Funny enough, the most recent one was Star Ocean for the Xbox and 360. Now, the game itself isn't hard. However, I entered the final battle without leveling up my second healer at all, and not maxing out my main party. In doing so, the boss was impossible. Still though,I didn't want to have to restart again (damn me and my forgetting multiple save states). So I re-played for hours and hours, finally beating it.
Not sure if time well spent honestly...

Some 16-bit Japanese shooters come to mind, but I'll throw in a sports game. I had a FIFA game for the DS. After two Month's of freaquent play, playing as Brasil, and making my opponent Malta, I never won (or tied) a single game. Total BS!

I beat Ghosts n Goblins but there was the one part of the game, Stage 4, I believe, that took over 100 tries for me to get past. I remember playing with a friend once and him begging me that he had enough 
Hardest for me? I remember Rush n Attack for the NES. That game was impossible. You get hit one time and you died.
There's numerous RPG's that I've played and could have beat but never finished because I got bored with it. I'm the type that has to finish every little side quest to be satisfied.

I remember my friends having Contra games in the 8/16 bit era and thinking they were pretty brutal. The only one I owned myself was Contra 4 for the DS, and I swear that game was designed to destroy your ego. I'm all for a challenge, but there's a point were a game just becomes a giant F-U kick in the nuts.

Played em both, beat em both. Never though have I been able to beat the worst game ever created: Castelian. It's unbelievably bad, and the hardest game I've ever played.
Another pretty insane one was Immortal, also for the NES. Every trap will oneshot kill you, and many of them are difficult to avoid. It's an interesting rpg, but difficult to beat without reading a strategy guide... which I refused to to do until I'd already beaten it.
Another fairly difficult one is Elven Legacy. Some of those battles are insane, and if you want to get to hidden levels even more so.

and no tents? ALWAYS go with tents. And Ethers.
To have near infinite healing, level up someone's black mage job to level 6. Wander until you find an enemy that uses mp and cast osmose, gaining all the mp that monster has. After the battle, have him switch to white mage and use that mp to heal everyone, then switch back to black mage. Repeat. Those jobs get difficult to keep track of, and there are some really powerful hidden ones.

I didnt think the sonic series was all that difficult. If were talking about hard games from our childhood, id say decap attack, micro machines, aladdin, zombies ate my neighbors, and steel empire all rank up there on difficulty. Though i beat the first two eventually.
