I've been playing guitar for around 3 or 4 years....and I'm ready to move onto the next level....how do I....what do I need to practice. ....I've got bar chords....the pentatonic scale. ....the do ra mi fa so la di da scale.....Most closed and open chords.....
where do I go from here ?

YouTube has helped me tremendously......find videos of other people playing and try to do what they do..or find videos of people teaching certain things..
also finding other people in your area to jam with helps...especially if they can teach you new stuff as well
. ...keep playing though and everything else will just fall into place.

Play as often as you can.
**** PLAY ALONG WITH OTHER MORE EXPERIENCED MUSICIANS...THATS WHERE YOU WILL LEARN ALOT....find some home jam sessions...You can go to open mic..or jam sessions and meet others..then get into a more intimate setting where you can play and talk and learn more stuff..
Play along with cd's ....

**** PLAY ALONG WITH OTHER MORE EXPERIENCED MUSICIANS...THATS WHERE YOU WILL LEARN ALOT....find some home jam sessions...You can go to open mic..or jam sessions and meet others..then get into a more intimate setting where you can play and talk and learn more stuff..
Play along with cd's ....

Thanks man......luckily i bumped into....a great musician at my local music store and now i practice with them every Wednesday. .....I'm excited and scard @ the same time.....can't wait

Now you have your cords to memory-and knowledge of reading notes of music-etc...next step is pick old songs to play-see how well you can play a full song and keeping the beat,rhythem patterns of sound.with notes you have in memory---developing a rhythm organized etc......Record your self...compare your playing/work to a real recording of same song--if you do well n the comparison,then you will be ready to play with others.Know your music.they might not know what you think they know.......and it just sounds ok etc...........called practice study time by going threw older songs done of the past........  --remember because someone is playing a guitar or instrament,does not mean they are playing the music and or song correctly etc..

My only suggestion is: practice regularly because good habits develop skills.
I remember Eddie Van Halen stating in an interview once that all of his friends would be out partying and cruising on Friday & Saturday night and he'd be in his bedroom practicing guitar.

Practice.
Maybe lessons, a book.
I've done these things and alot of watching others.
The key is practice. Don't be afraid ti just mess around.

That's really great advice....EVER ONE WHO CCOMPUTER !!!!
i actually played with a band yesterday for the first time.....i didn't do to bad for not knowing there songs.....i kept up pretty good thanks to them yelling out the key before the switch.....lol
they kept commenting on how good my rhythm was.....but told me i still need to keep count.....i got lost in my.....solo....it sounded ok....but i need to keep a count on different time measures for sure.....
I would much rather b home on a Saturday night playing then out partying....i love music.

Inspiration. Expressing with notes. I used to sit inside after football and jam. Puck songs you like. Youtube them and learn them. They will show you different modes and scales. Start simple first. Go from there.. good luck.

I have been playing for 31 yrs. Been playing in bands for 30 yrs. I learned the basics and went from there. I have always been able to hold my own in a band but just in the last 3 or 4 yrs I have come into my own. It's not like I started practicing more with the goal of becoming better, but what I did do was learn learn learn. I found myself learning 2 or 3 songs a week and sometimes more. While watching tv I found myself just doodling on the guitar during commercials and before I knew it things were coming out, new rhythmns and chord progressions and then came the original songs. Sometimes I add words sometimes I just play instrumentals. Not saying you have to play guitar while watching tv I'm just saying that I found I could watch a little tv and play a little during the commercials. (Kinda a deal I worked out with my wife). The end result.....my practice time increased by several hours a week and that's what took me to the next level. Good luck man.

Don't stop with simply knowing cords or major patterns...learn the notes used as well as the fret board. There are a number of ways to play any chord. This will expand your ability exponentially......and play....play...play. experiment....if it sounds good it is good. I usually have a guitar in my hands 3-5 hours a day....love it !!!!

Make sure you have a pro quality guitar. The more the better and just play all of them. Like everyone else says...practice a lot. Try to develop your own style. I never wanted to play like someone else. That job is already taken. Learn different styles especially blues.That is a good solid foundation. I don't worry about all the technical aspects and what is right or wrong. I play my music the way I want to and everyone likes it. Good luck to you and keep on.Most of all play from your heart. Leave your mind out of it. From your heart to your hands is a much shorter path.

What's up bro hope everythings goin alright for you, I been playing both acoustic and electric guitar since I was 13 (I'm 22 now) and the only suggestion I could give you is practice, practice and devotion, try to practice for 1, 2 or even better 3 hours , work on your finger agility as well, not only practice but theory will get you where you want to be, try to improvise and compose songs of your own.
That will help you grow.

The guitar is a instrument that you build a relationship with. The more intimate you are the better you will be. Sometimes it's not just learning songs, licks or scales but simply touching the instrument builds intimacy.

Play as much as you can , play with other musicians you can learn a lot from other guitar players ( even the bad players can teach you something new sometimes )
To get good you have to play play & play some more.

Find you someone to jam with and keep challenging each other to learn more- different styles- different artists. You can only get so far by yourself. Put a band together.

I just say practice , practice , practice...but always find ways making practice fun..and always keep your heart into it.
I've played on and off my entire life... I've played and practiced with local bands during different periods of my life.
..but am mostly just a solo instrumentalist..and just study and play for fun.
I've learned there are just some people I can't play with and some that I can.
I once read an interview by Joe Satriany ...asking him why has he always been just a solo artist...
....and he said it was only because he's never had any luck finding guys who willingly wanted to play along with him.
However he taught guitar to many rising popular guitar players.
Most all the best advice has already been posted here ..so there's not much I can offer.
Other than my own practice style.
Having fretboard knowledge in my opinion ..is the most important key to playing ..next to practice.
For years ..I spent countless hours learning songs from tab ..before learning to read actual music.
I'd learn every knew sing that came out...but after learning to understand music theory and memorized my notes location on my fretboard...
I saw that all this material without lyrics were often the same songs ..just in a recycled form.
A good guitar player will know the 5 pentatonic box patterns and and the seven major or minor modes.
Knowing which notes to begin and stop on ..are what make these patterns work.
Its how you choose to land notes in these pattern forms ..is what makes them sound like music.
In my recent years I've given up reading most other peoples music...and just identify their sounds by recognizing the box patterns in their style of playing.
I commonly practice along to electronic drum machines ..that come installed on Zoom pedals ..verses using boring metronomes.
..and create my own phrases and music by manipulating all modes and box patterns ..up and down the guitars neck.
The more familier you become with the patterns and note locations...the better player and the more advanced you will become...
