If this is going to be a lyrical composition, then the words come next. If not, the melody stands when developed for that part. After all the main melody parts are written (and/or lyrics) then I start to compose rhythm and accompanying lines around it to enhance the main line, layering as many or few as the song requires. This is the hard part. Sometimes it is hard to step back and realize that the composition only needs certain things and not over-write it. Then I enlist the help of people to write things I don't, like percussion. Or more correctly, write parts that are humanly possible to play. That's basically my process
