I would like to generate a list of great places for camping in Southern California. Maybe we can also start a club here for men, women and couples looking for others to go camping with? Anywhere south of Bakersfield and west of the California/Arizona border. Particularly cheap (let's say under $15 a night) or free. Can be developed, semi developed or dispersed campgrounds/campsites. Lets be descriptive as possible and not only say where it is but also why you like it and what there is to do in the area.

To start the list off here is one of my favorites thats right here in San Diego County.

Corral Canyon
Morena Stokes Valley Rd, Campo, CA 91906

This area offers two campgrounds, Corral Canyon and Bobcat Meadows that are free with only a Southern California U.S. Forestry Adventure Pass ($5 a day or $30.oo for a year long pass. You can also purchase a second pass at the same time for an additional $5.00) that must be displayed in your vehicle when parked in the Cleveland National Forest. It is totally worth it and covers the Angeles, Cleveland, Los Padres, and San Bernardino National Forests.

There is hiking, off roading, fishing to do and even the Golden Acorn Indian Casino close by. Can be loud during the day from the offroaders but at night its very quiet and often your the only campers there at night. There are no facilities at either campground with the exception of vault toilets. Also no water so be sure to bring plenty with you.

Here's hoping everyone has fun with this and we get a big list and group!!!!!

Hi, good thread. Used to camp a lot when I lived there. There is a campground up above Lake Elsinore and just off the highway. If I remember right is't Bluebird Canyon?????????? Lots of love oaks, vault toilets, water spigots scattered around. Huge camp sights. Hiking trails. There is another state campground further west on the highway too. Darn memory.......can't remember the name of the highway.

I also dry camped east of ElCentro in the old mining areas. Good rockhounding out there. Almost all BLM land so free. Just need to move locations every 14 days. Bring plenty of water.

I like Potrero out by the Tecate border crossing. Nice and flat, old oak tree, decent enough facilities.

I've been mostly going up north over the past few years, so this is about all I know in the southland.

Check out the picture on my profile of the ice covered and snow packed road I was on. My brother and I were camping January 1, 2015 at Indian Flats Campground in the Cleveland National Forest just outside Warner Springs CA when a decent little snow storm came through. We took the back way to Palomar Mountain which was Nate Harrison Road/Grade. Loved this trip. However got slammed into though by an idiot driving with no chains who came sliding down the road out of control on the ice. Typical Southern California driver not used to driving in the elements with his two daughters and wife who thought 4 wheel drive was sufficient for an ice covered and snow packed downhill road. Would have pushed us both right off the road and down a ravine if not for me having my chains on. Had to drop it into gear and push back to stop us both! Got pissed at the guy for sure but as my brother pointed out to me when he said "You know shitty as it is that he crashed into us you just might have saved him and his families lives!".

30" snow overnight two weeks back didn't even slow me down.

When I was in the fifth grade we had a snow storm in my home town of Merced Ca.From that day on I was hopelessly drawn to snow country.Sleds and 4 wheelers and if lucky Snow Cats.

Semper Fi !!!
