1. Hell yes
2. yes, more regional and state offices needed
3. possibly
4. no, but more local influence needed regionally
5. no way
6. no opinion

The primary elections are in a couple weeks with early voting under way now. In news stories and commercials, the Republicans and their PACS claim the federal government is too big and powerful. They don't like ObamaCare, EPA rules that affect big business and corporations, and other federal rules.

Demos says some of the negative commercials and Republican language on state's rights sound like racists comments and concerns of the Klan in the 1950s. Demos point to programs that people take for granted now: Medicare, Medicaid, HUD, welfare, Social Security, SSI, EPA rules, voting rights, ADA, equal opportunity laws, etc.

Moderates like myself say we need these programs, that Americans are too use to them now to put up with suddenly doing away with them, etc. However, I think many moderates won't object to splitting up the D.C. decision-making process and headquarters to have more federal offices at the state-level with regional-federal Headquarters being involved in policy-decision making that involves each state's governor's offices, the federal US senators and representatives, and each state's Legislative Council.

Basically, we say some of the decision-making by federal brass should reflect the wishes of local officials and should be cleared by the majority of the US Senators and Representatives from the US House.

Moderates say people who should enjoy the same rights and laws no matter what state they move too, such as in the military, to go to college, or to relocate for a job. Moderates also say checks-and-balances require two level of enforcement of society's rules and laws, that the U.S. has too much of a history of people in charge failing to enforce laws or bending rules to benefit powerful corporations.

So, people, what do you think? Does DC have too much power? Just about right but changes in the system needed? Or the system is OK?

You've obviously never heard the TEA Party people ranting about the erosion of their rights -- 2nd amendment and 1st especially -- by the feds and others.

Good thread and some good points. It brings about the thought we are so divided amongst ourselves, I don't think anyone would deny we don't want our individual rights stomped...but working together, what an idea.

City officials in North Little Rock (across the river from LR) are in trouble because tried to block a group home for the disabled, 3 people living there with paid-in-home CNA-Cook employees, can't remember if one of the employees lived there too.... Federal law on rights for fair housing violated.

Police brutality in Russellville that resulted in 60-year-old dying in jail a couple years ago.

All sorts of crooked politicians.

The funny thing about the post above JR's is he's against the federal government but then complains about local officials violating rights. Our society clearly has to have 2 levels of protections.... state and feds controlling local and state abuses.

agreed, and if the officials in north little rock are in trouble it goes to show that a strong federal government is working as designed.

The funny thing about the post above JR's is he's against the federal government but then complains about local officials violating rights. Our society clearly has to have 2 levels of protections.... state and feds controlling local and state abuses.

yep. before the constitution the articles of confederation 'gave the states' the power to run roughshod over a federal government without teeth. imagine the difference today if those articles were still in effect.

It is well over a decade when our then MI Governor Engler closed 3/4 of our State psychiatric hospitals. In my own opinion the rise in substance abuse (self medicating) has risen drastically, and any homes that were rehabilitative in measure were fought against opening within certain areas. We had a similar mess although different medical model as in disabled. We still do. So they remain homeless.

Does it have to be big to be strong? Does bureaucracy mean diplomacy?

After some investigating it amazes me that liberals are so easily taken off the hook in some major 'fail' moments of the U.S.

Big ones too. Look at the decision for the Iraq war. The 'resolution' so to speak.

Who voted yes amongst the 'innocent' Democratic party that has evaded implication in this invasion?

The federal government is always too big and too invasive, unless you are running to them and expecting a handout?

Take a look at some of the states with no state income tax? Florida and Texas come to mind, who do they run to for disaster aid? Fires, weather? Nothing like a little personal responsibility? Pay state taxes and have a rainy day fund for emergencies?

A move like that would be political suicide for politicians in those states? It's easier to blame a 3rd party? Big government?

Growing up in Cleveland Ohio in the 50's and 60's? We like other Great Lakes states had cesspools to our north. Does anyone actually believe that would have changed without some " big government " regulation?

Sure the system isn't perfect, but maybe because of our politicians pushing their own agenda and searching for bigger campaign contributions?

The VA mess is a growing example of why we need federal officials to have to answer to regional officials and their bosses and Congress. Plus a strong Inspector General corps with power to arrest and remove crooked bosses.

Does DC have too much power? ... YES!

Just think about it, why is it that you're only allowed to vote for who gets to be in office? As oppose to voting on the actual issue! The illusion of choice.... Democrats & Republicans are really the same thing. Yea they differ on a couple things but that's just to keep the masses divided, look at their foreign policies and you will see that they are almost identical!

Not government...society...

There are too many people with bad intentions trying to get their hands in the cookies jar. Until we change our attitude as a group government will only keep getting bigger. You don't need a law if nobody is trying to do what the law is intended to prevent. We only have ourselves to blame! Besides, John Boehner an Mitch McConell and company can't get off their collective butts to do anything these days!

Sorry about the typographical error.

The Independent Party of Delaware has drafted an Inspector General bill to curb public corruption.

Delaware has been ranked as high as 4th in corruption.

The D's and Rs don't have public interest legislation like this.

We should have seen something big and bad coming back in the day when government started MAKING us turn our clocks ahead and backward twice a year, if that ain't a mind f**k I don't know what is.... they have to be laughing their asses off and the abuse of control has escalated ever since. We don't get to vote on these things, they do and most of them have different lifestyles than the majority of us. They do not represent the majority.
