funmetaphor Ledgewood, NJ 70, joined Feb. 2010	I've written a few short stories and have thought of writing a novel. I think it would help for you to write every day at the same time. If you have kids, get up an hour or two before them and write or wait until they're in school. The discipline is very important to the flow of writing. When I get an idea I let it sit on my mind for a while to get some other insights, ideas, for the story. I often sit at one time to get the whole thing down on paper, 6 hours or so, and let the thoughts flow out of me. Revise later a few times to perfect your art. Try to concentrate on a chapter at a time, not the whole book. One writer had 97, two or three page chapters in his book. Most books run about 300 pages up to 500 pages and any number of chapters. My short stories for nine to ten year olds run about 17 - 27 pages. For two to five year olds, about two to three pages. (They have yet to be published though.) Make an outline for the story, ask yourself, why is he/she doing this or that, and answer it in one paragraph. Revision of your story will help with the point of view of the characters, descriptions, and plots, to your story. They can be in the outline as you revise it too. Anne

One thing you should try doing is just spend a little time brainstorming - write everything you want to include down. Write a basic story arc with beginning, middle, climax, ending. Then think about how your characters speak - what accents, what cultural influences, and research slang from those cultures you could pepper into the character's dialogue. Get every key plot moment and character emotion down and start writing. This is your character and story bible/reference that will make your tale stronger. When finished writing your first draft, leave it alone for a while. Then later read through it and make notes where it needs changed. Think about how you can add suspense by subliminally foreshadowing something to come. Work backwards if you like and then set that draft aside and rewrite the whole thing from the beginning. Serious writing is a lot of work. It takes planning and organization if it is to be any good or taken seriously by readers. This is just what I like to do when I write. Sometimes I don't do any of this, but just sit down and start writing off the top of my head. If it works out, great. But then I reread it several times to make sure it works from start to finish.
