I toilet trained my cat some years ago using a kit I purchased online which has a perforated ring system that you progressively remove and thought it would be great to get a small female dog (because male dogs hike their leg and it could be messy) to do the same.
If I cannot toilet train a dog, I still would be content with a litter trained dog that does not need to be let outside all hours of the night to use the bathroom.
Anyone have a litter trained dog, or know of anyone litter training their dog? Is it easy?

Yes it can be done, just make sure to use dog litter, not cat litter, major pet stores also carry better boxes for dogs. It will take time an patience. Good Luck

OP, if they are properly housebroken, and fed on schedule, you will not have to let them out at night. That's only necessary during puppyhood when you are potty training them.
If you want a low maintenance pet (there really isn't any such thing, all require a lot of care) consider a fish, or a small animal, such as a bird, hamster or guinea pig. JMHO

That's why I worded my post like I did. My son spends more time scrubbing his fish tank than the cat's litter box.
There are no easy care pets, or for that matter, easy care plants either , unless you get an air fern.

Oh,,, well, please forgive me for trying to maximize the efficiency of my household. Some of us actually work 60 plus hours a week, and would like the benefits having of a guard dog in our home to protect our household while we are gone.
Clearly you are content with mediocrity. That's great! More power to you! But personally, I like the idea of having a low maintenance pet that I can go on vacation for a few days without finding a babysitter.
Not everyone has excessive amounts of time on their hands to treat their animals better than their children by dressing them up in ridiculous sweaters, and dragging them around everywhere with them on their lap.
This entrepreneurial spirit of taking something and making it better either turn a profit, or make my life more efficient will not be repressed by naysayers. There's always room for improvement.

You just proved my point. You work 60 hours, you don't have time for a pet. Try getting an alarm system instead. You don't have to do any work with that. You can't go on vacation for days and leave a dog at home. You seem to know nothing about having a pet at all! People that don't have "excessive amounts of time" to put in with a pet shouldn't have one that takes excessive amounts of time. Dogs aren't "low maintenance."

You're the reason the humane society is full. People get animals thinking they are just there and don't take any work and get rid of them when they are too much.
