We had success with miracle grow soil, black cow manu re, black peat moss and mulch. Containers produced more than we needed. We had tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, egg plant, string beans and we just started our mustard, collards and spinach this week.

I would imagine it depends on what you're growing. Earth boxes seem to be a lot more affected by temperature changes while things grown in plain dirt the soil is a lot more regular. Same with moistness. I've heard that a lot of plants suffer shock if subjected to too much fluctuation of either.

Try adding something to retain moisture.
I have added sawdust from a local lumber mill to my mixture it helps break up the soil and keeps the water in the soil.
the saw dust also breaks down to fertilise the soil and acts as insulation to keep temperature leveled out.
I also add sand for strawberries they like better drainage.
Best of luck with it.
