Ive owned 26 cats at one time years ago wen i lived on my 4 acres of land in the woods. N every single one of em had their own personality, its amazing! But yup, 26 cats people!! Culd u handle that?? Lol

It depends on how much time, space and money you have.
If you don't have enough time to groom, love, play and give them undivided, individual attention to each one, then you have too many.
If you cannot afford to spay, shelter and feed each one, then you have too many.
If they are fighting because there isn't enough space for each one to have his or her own safe spot, then you have too many.
If the litter box is filled with feces, the cats are covered with fleas, you have too many.
My apartment only holds two comfortably. I have only one cat now and she isn't willing to share the space, my time and attention with another cat. At this point, two would be too many.

What really upsets me is when someone ditches their cats for another pet. Cats are not throwaway pets, they are part of your family.
I had a friend (no longer friends) who had to move and left his cat and kitten in the middle of a barren area. He felt they would find water and eat mice. What about winter, parasites, loneliness, predators, 100+ degree weather, injury... ? Another abandoned her adopted cats because she could no longer feed them and then turns around and gets a horse? Seriously?! She could turn her back on the cats because she claimed to be poor but then gets a horse and has to board it. He justification was she always wanted a horse.
We just lost our only support to help abandoned cats in our area, but continue to ship in rescue dogs from other states that cannot be placed. We need to address our cat problem first. Seeing cats bloody and in pain is hard for me.

I think the safest household rule of all is..
ONLY allow as many companions as there are hands!
(provided u can shelter them during extream weather, feed them, obtain basic vaccinations/vet visits & spade/neuter them)

That depends on the person and their resources. How many do you have room for, and how many can you afford to feed and care for properly, (including their regular veterinary checkups and vaccines, and also allowing for emergencies)?
That's how you determine how many is too many.
