Fools
(Amy Abernathy 2014)

Fools don’t want to understand you.
They only want to tell you what they think.
Harsh words can be like deep waters.
But true wisdom flows like a stream.

They don’t care if they hurt your feelings,
They are about their own opinion.
They think they have the right to say harsh things.
If you speak truth they get offended.

(Chorus)
Fools don’t want to understand you,
They don’t want to do what’s right.
They don’t want to understand you.
Fools just want to pick a fight.

Always trying to prove you wrong.
Trying to trip you up, and twist your words.
Boasting a lot and asking for trouble.
So Smart and want to be heard.

The words of fools can start many fights.
Foolish people make you so mad.
I wish they would listen to understand.
They just want to argue it’s so sad.

(Chorus)
Fools don’t want to understand you,
They don’t want to do what’s right.
They don’t want to understand you.
Fools just want to pick a fight.

Quote from waki_1:
Do we believe our soul is filled with just one spirit ..or are we filled with many spirits..Those spirits who will live for eternity ..and as we learn lifes lessons and we stop allowing our spirits to teach, they begin to leave our soul to help a far more willing soul... Oh could it be when the last spirit leaves our body, our soul begins to die..

So I lay here in my self created sadness,, I wonder if my soul is dieing for I no longer let my spirits guide me ??
I like this.

Fools
(Amy Abernathy 2014)

Spoken by someone who seems to have been around them as much as I have.

Here is one I did attempting to come from a woman's point of view...

"Baby Daddy"

© 2014 Mark Cote

(chorus) hey there
baby daddy
do you think this is just a game
hey there
baby daddy
guess who is left to blame
you can run
you can hide
but fate you know will decide
when you think you're gonna play
baby daddy you're gonna pay

since you left
bills piling up
this single mother's had enough
hungry mouths I have to feed
and lonely hearts a dad they need

my sunny mood ring has turned to red
from what I saw and what you said
right then the tide had turned
baby daddy you'll be burned

(chorus)
(instrumental)

I felt so cheap and been used
better watch which girls you choose
you've gotta sleep sometime
what's in that drink they'll never find

(chorus)

one that I cant seem to finish....

Been two years since she said she had to go
two year since she said she had only one regret
Words that simmer and burn slow
But my dear never fret

Cause I'm movin on
Yeah I'm movin on

You have a good start with both the verse structure and the chorus as well. Focus on telling a story in the verses. Your chorus already is the "escape". develop one at a time. See if that helps.

"Now That You're Gone"

© 2014 Mark Cote

where does the laughter go
on the distant winds that blow
after the end of the show
now that you're gone

the brightest nose of all the clowns
spotlight glows when you're around
should we bring the curtain down
now that you're gone

(chorus) now that you're gone
did we learn what you had to teach
walking now on shaky feet
now that you're gone

now that you're gone
though the laugh seems far away
the depth of words you would say
it can brighten a dismal day
now that you're gone

heading out now on our own
spark of crazy you have shown
like seeds that you have sown
now that you're gone

A part of me I saw in you
I think we all could feel it too
We'll hold it to pull us through
now that you're gone

(chorus)

I came to at the foot of a mountain. It's peaks pierced the stars.
Wiped blood from my brow, wondering where you are.
Hear the wolves come crashing, they smell brokenness, and pain.
Smile wryly as thier pads hit the ground.
No meat,here, they will gain.
Over the mountain I hear the rivers roaring.
Thier power, the mountains cannot hide.
Broken, I'll climb this mountain.
Then cross that river wide.

Love is like you
(Amy Abernathy 2014)

Love is like music dancing on the water,
It’s like the trees when wind passes through.
It’s like the waves of the deep blue ocean,
But most of all love is like you.

Love’s like summer time with pretty flowers in bloom,
It’s like the grass hit by the morning dew,
Or even a fresh pot of coffee starting to brew,
But most of all love is like you.

(Chorus)
Many Things remind me of love,
Wonderful things from up above,
But most of all, it reminds me of you.
Oh, love is, love is, Love is like you!

Love is like sunshine that lights up the day,
It’s like birds singing a beautiful melody.
It’s like a river where fresh water flows,
Or the budding of the first summer rose.

Love is like a rainbow with lovely colors that blend,
It’s like a stranger showing kindness to a new friend,
Or like your best friend that always helps you through,
But most of all love is like you.

(Chorus)
Many Things remind me of love,
Wonderful things from up above,
But most of all, it reminds me of you.
Oh, love is, love is, Love is like you!
( Bridge)
There are many things I can compare love to,
But there is no better example than you.
Because darling love is like you.

(Chorus)
Many Things remind me of love,
Wonderful things from up above,
But most of all, it reminds me of you.
Oh, love is, love is, Love is like you!

"A Butterfly On A Summer's Day"

© 2012 Mark Cote

With the gentle raindrops
listen to them all
when their song is over
the wonder of it all
I can hear a happy flutter
from near and far away
like a butterfly on a summer's day

painting a rainbow
with everything she sings
you can feel all the warmth
of the love that it brings
I can hear a happy flutter
from near and far away
like a butterfly on a summer's day

In my lifelong journey
you're always by my side
when I lose direction
you'll be my guide, be my guide

with the kiss of a sunrise
she greets a brand new day
never mind tomorrow
don't cry for yesterday
with a happy flutter
from near and far away
like a butterfly on a summer's day

(instrumental)

This is the one I am posting for this week....

"Magic In The Moonlight"

© 2012 Mark Cote

I spent my time in the arms of summer
her breath gently on my skin
with a love like no other
I wondered where in my life she had been

In her eyes I felt her passion
like the longing in the night
although I know it may be wrong
what I felt I knew was right

(chorus) She was my magic in the moonlight
I was the fire in her heart
she gave me something to remember
a love I know I can't forget
In my heart is says it all
of the rise and of the fall
of a moment in the night

then one night like the seasons
summer changing into fall
she left without a warning
and the coldness of it all

each year I pray a reason
she'll come back to me once again
though I know a love this special
is like a million out of ten

(chorus)

Grasp it in my hands
(2014 Amy Abernathy)

I need to think about some things,
To determine the thoughts in my mind.
Weed out the sunshine from the rain,
So I can truly know what I feel inside.

There’s been so much sadness and heartbreak,
Not sure if I want to go there again.
But I need to trust and be brave.
I don’t want to live in lonely land.

(Chorus)
I want to learn to love again,
I want to grasp it in my hands.
No More heartbreak and pain.
Tell me do you feel the same?

There’s been so much sadness and heartbreak,
I don’t know if I’m ready; don’t know if it’s true.
But I don’t want to hesitate,
To feel what I’m feeling for you.

I want to learn to love again,
Will you take my hand?
And show me love can be true.
I want my heart to be with you.

(Chorus)
I want to learn to love again,
I want to grasp it in my hands.
No More heartbreak and pain.
Tell me do you feel the same?
(Bridge)

I want to learn to love again,
I promise to let you in,
Please, please show me how to love again.

(Chorus)
I want to learn to love again,
I want to grasp it in my hands.
No More heartbreak and pain.
Tell me do you feel the same?

"Monkey Droppings"

© 2014 Mark Cote

swing tree to tree
here she comes
Looking like fun
so high up above

such a quest to be with her
what's left of you is in the dirt

(chorus) over here
over there
monkey droppings everywhere
that's all that's left to be found
monkey droppings on the ground
she'll scrape you up
another round
monkey droppings on the ground

this jungle love
so wild and new
watch out better
make a monkey of you

careless and free
not care who gets hurt
like cold droppings
hearts left in the dirt

(chorus)
(instrumental)

No one can clean
the trail she will leave
For playful fun
is meant to deceive

You’ve Helped me Before
(Amy Abernathy 2014)

At Times I’m afraid,
But have Courage to be brave.
Sometimes I’m hurt and misunderstood.
But take pain and make it something good.
(Chorus)
Lord You helped me before,
To know what I’m fighting for.
Don’t let me give up or give in.
For on your wings I can soar.

There is a fire deep inside,
That pushes me to fight.
When I’m down and weak,
Lord it is you that I seek.

(Chorus)
Lord You helped me before,
To know what I’m fighting for.
Don’t let me give up or give in.
For on your wings I can soar.

I don’t know the reasons why,
I pray for courage to arise.
I’ve been knocked down time and time again.
Through your grace I can win.
( Bridge )
Lord Please help get through,
I raise my hands to you.
On your wings I will soar,
I praise the one that I adore.

(Chorus)
Lord You helped me before,
To know what I’m fighting for.
Don’t let me give up or give in.
For on your wings I can soar.

I was being metaphorical. Humorous take on a them that Hall and Oates used for the song Maneater. Using metaphors opens up many new creative doors.

"The Man Upstairs"

© 2014 Mark Cote

Where we live we may call it home
but for me I feel so all alone
like a ghost in one's own home town
searching for the dream I have not found

If I erase your struggle erase your strife
pave a path for a better life
put you on the road with no more debts
an open road with no past regrets

(chorus) The man upstairs he saw it all
he saw the rise and he saw the fall
I now have the strength for standing tall
the man upstairs he saw it all
the man upstairs he saw it all

Dart in a map where will I begin
so many faces where will I fit in
like a bird I now am free
I cast my ship out upon the sea

in another town another state
maybe overseas will be my fate
packing up now I'm on the mend
like a willow I learned to bend

(chorus)

now I feel the sun it warms my face
gentle laughter a soft embrace
in her love I find a home
found something I had never known

Be kind
( Amy Abernathy 2014)

A little girl sits in her fifth grade class.
A boy teases her and says she’s fat.
A girl teases him because, he loves the Lord.
A bully picks on a kid because he’s bored.

You don’t have to be so mean.
You can be nice, you don’t have to agree.
It seems the world teaches to hate one another.
Different views we all got something to offer.

( Chorus)
Be kind to others and love your neighbor,
Life’s too short to be a hater,
If you’re in a bind, you may need them later.
Life’s too short to be hater.
So be kind and love your neighbors.

Sometimes it seems that love is in short supply,
Too quick to judge and too quick to reply.
You can be nice, you don’t have to agree.
Show some love and don’t be so mean.

A man gets teased because he dresses that way.
A girl gets attacked because she’s gay.
We need to be careful with the words we use.
People get hurt and feel abused.

( Chorus)
Be kind to others and love your neighbor,
Life’s too short to be a hater,
Be kind to others and love your neighbor

You don’t have to be so mean.
You can be nice, you don’t have to agree.
It seems the world teaches to hate one another.
Different views we all got something to offer.

(Chorus)
Be kind to others and love your neighbor,
Life’s too short to be a hater,
Be kind to others and love your neighbor

"Stepping Into Sunlight"

© 2013 Mark Cote

goodnight dark days
may you rest in peace
you never really were
that good for me

between the tears I cried
and the long lonely nights
all you took from me
was my will to try

(chorus) stepping into sunlight
yesterday was a bad ride
stepping into sunlight
take me away

too bad for you
when I hit the ground
you'll come crawling back
she said with a frown

you came around
were you just company
or was I just
was I just
to blind to see

(chorus)
(instrumental)

you may lose some years
before you come to know
what it's taking from you
is where you want to go

Here's a tiny poem I scribbled out a while ago. Never developed it into a full set of lyrics.

"Nature breathes her fury
try to abolish our love in a flurry
a love not meant to be
'tween you and me
shall we cast it to the hungry sea?
in this moment with you in my arms
Love will do us no harm.
may the tomorrows take us away."

Before we Were
( Amy Abernathy 2014)

The first time I met you,
I never saw you before.
But I knew you were familiar,
When you walked through the door.

It’s no coincidence, that I met you,
And God had made our prayers come true.
( Chorus)
Because……………
Before we were, you were there.
Before I knew you, you were there.
Not by body, but by prayer.

So before we were, you were there.
God knew what I needed,
And planned it from the start.
He knew the perfect one,
To capture my heart.

You were there,
Before I knew you.
You’re the one I prayed for.
God knew us both
And opened the door.

It’s no coincidence, that I met you,
And God had made our prayers come true.
( Chorus)
Because……………
Before we were, you were there.
Before I knew you, you were there.
Not by body, but by prayer.
So before we were, you were there.
( Bridge)
You were there. You were there,
You’re the answer to my prayers.
Before we were, you were there.
(Outro )
Yes he knew me,
He knew me well.
You’re the answer
To my prayers.
Before I knew you, you were there.

Such a sweet love song May I have this verse, madam?

"Sunshine Dream"

© 2009 Mark Cote

Started off, left in a Monday world
Monday people, Monday places
looking for
a funny face, a warm embrace
for my weekend

lonely sea, in a blue boat named Hope
islands come, islands go
looking for
a warm sand. a caring hand
for my home

(chorus) oh, what a time it will be
a sunny beach meets a lonely sea
she'll warm me with her glow
oh, what a time it will be
sunshine dream
enrapture me

now I know, she's out there, somewhere
now I know, it cant be, so rare

but for now, there she is in my dreams
distant wish, distant love
reaching for
a funny face, a warm embrace
for my beautiful dream
(chorus)

May I have this verse? Which one?

I like that one, you have lots of them, you should find a co-writer.

I was saying that like a man would say "may I have this dance?" A lyrical flirt. Yes, I would be interested to see what a co-writer could contribute to my writing. No offers though. So, I quill alone.

I get bouts of writer's block many times. Then I hear something or get an idea, hear a catchy melody and off I go. Remember using metaphors can open LOTS of creative doors. You could even insult them this way and they wouldn't know and would love the song. That has been done many times in the past.

Maybe one day you and I could spend a day and write something? I have never collaborated directly and I think it would be fun.

"Welcome To Tomorrow"
© 2014 Mark Cote

Romeo waiting in courtyards
waiting for painted dolls
music flowing like perfume
Aladdin's carpet has stalled

life is a spiraling compass
never know where to go
soft is a budding flower
just waiting to unfold

(chorus) welcome
welcome to tomorrow
welcome to today

in this world spinning 'round
different face
same old clown
in this world spinning 'round
different state
same old town

welcome to tomorrow
welcome to today

summers can feel like winter
without love it's so cold
life can be so demanding
making a young girl look old

talking in plastic phrases
where is the world I had known
people acting like children
our world is just bought and sold

(chorus)
(instrumental)

the future lies in our children
in the hope in their eyes
is it truth that we tell them
or sugar-coat them with lies

(chorus)

Yeah that would be fun! I try metaphors, but they don't always make sense to any one but me, I feel like the audience needs to get it. I have used a few here and there.

Heart Shaped Glass -Version 1
( Amy Abernathy 2014)

(Intro)
A Glass full of lies,
A Glass full of alibis.

There you were a good looking stranger.
You walked in, my heart was in danger.
I never guessed that your words were untrue.
Through a heart shaped glass I believed you.

(Chorus)

Lies from a heart shaped glass,
Go down smooth if you drink them fast.
Oh yeah, Lies from a heart shaped glass,
They go down smooth if you drink them Fast.

Hoping that I found the real thing,
Your charms put my heart on a string.
I fell too fast and could not see,
Your cheating heart was lying to me.

( Chorus)

Lies from a heart shaped glass,
Go down smooth if you drink them fast.
Oh yeah, Lies from a heart shaped glass,
They go down smooth if you drink them Fast.

(Bridge)

Oh yeah a heart shaped glass,
Boy, did I drink it fast.
Just couldn’t see it Couldn’t last.
Like the wine,
In my heart Shaped Glass.

(Chorus)

Lies from a heart shaped glass,
Go down smooth if you drink them fast.
Oh yeah, Lies from a heart shaped glass,
They go down smooth if you drink them Fast.

(Outro)
Oh, Oh, Lies from a heart shaped glass,
They go down smooth,
They go down smooth,
If you drink them, if you drink them,
Fast.

Lyrics- Amy Abernathy
Melody- Lisa Gates and Ken Rawe

This is a metaphor for how we ignore red flags when we are in love. When we look through a heart shaped glass, we let our feelings justify things that normally should make us pause or question the other person.I have a melody for this one. If you would like to hear it, you can go to soundcloud.com and type in Amy from Ga.

Yes, that is it. Even if you feel nobody but you will understand your metaphor, use it. The artist is merely a conduit for something larger than even we understand. I say, " never question it, just write it". You will find it stretches both your mind and your fans' minds as well. Keeps unlocking more creative doors. And once you get up to that level of metaphorical writing it is like being up on a tall ladder and being able to peer out for quite a ways. Great feeling. ( You can use another analogy if you are afraid of heights. LOL)

I hide my pain behind a broken smile. No one sees the pain nor cares to see. I try to talk but my mouth wont open so the words go unsaid. One day the words will come out but by then it will be to late, to be saved.

BB I like it, short and to the point.

Mark- I like to be able to relate to the methaphors. They have to make sense to me though, or I don't think people will relate to it. Your right it does create some depth in the songs. I think Taylor Swift has some wonderful lyrics and metaphors in her lyrics, i have been trying to write songs in that type of format. I have some good ones, but i only want to share the songs I have a copyright on.

Hand Up
(Amy Abernathy 2014)

You say you don’t give more than I can handle,
But you must think I’m really tough.
Lord I’m burning both ends of the candle,
And I feel like giving up.

I know one thing is for certain,
I’m down and very weak.
The wheels that I’ve been turning,
Makes me claim my defeat.

(Chorus)
I don’t need a hand out,
Just my hand up.
Lord I raise my hands to the sky,
Would you let your hands meet mine?
I don’t need a hand out,
Just a hand up.

I know on my own I can’t take the load.
I can’t be everything I need to be.
Weary tired, barefoot and broke.
I need your strength to carry me.

Hands of grace and full of mercy,
Reach down and take a hold.
Let your Strength cover me.
I lift my hands, Lord Take control.

(Chorus)
I don’t need a hand out,
Just my hand up.
Lord I raise my hands to the sky,
Would you let your hands meet mine?
I don’t need a hand out,
Just a hand up.

(Bridge)
If ever I needed you,
Then the time is now.
I put my hands up to the sky.
Lord Please let your hands meet mine.

(Chorus)
I don’t need a hand out,
Just my hand up.
Lord I raise my hands to the sky,
Would you let your hands meet mine?
I don’t need a hand out,
Just a hand up.

Good optimistic religious song.

"An Angel's Tears"
© 2008 Mark Cote

Been through so much pain in such a short time
Like a hill of broken glass that I must climb
What's the reason that I suffer, and am all alone?
Surrounded by people with hearts of stone

(chorus) What can I say when it falls on deaf ears?
Cry a rainy day, an Angels tears
Can't see through your anger and all that you fear
So on a rainy day an angels tears

Thought I'd found a place my soul could cry
On a moonlit beach through a musical sigh
A tempo calmed my soul I can't deny
It's all inside my head so I keep it inside
(chorus)

I reached out to you but you're too far
Like trying to catch a shooting star
I reach out to another wherever you are
A nurse to mend these bleeding scars

(tag) I'll let them cry for a million years
for all my pain an angels tears

Thank you. This one was one of my early ones from the 1st year i started writing. I based it all on a premise. I woke up one afternoon and it was raining. I thought. What if that is the angels crying for me. Since I hadn't cried from all I had been through. And the title was born. Then I just extrapolated on the theme for the lyrics. I am honored you like it.

Here is a Christmas one.

It’s about a Baby
(Amy Abernathy CC 2014)

Christmas, Christmas Are you near,
Been waiting for you all the year.
The tree is sparkling
With Tinsel and lights
The candles and snowmen
Light up the night.
The turkey smells rather nice.
The cookies are baking back inside.

Gifts are wrapped neatly with bows.
Stockings are hanging in little rows.
Presents are standing under the tree,
Spending time with the family.
It’s not about the presents,
Although it’s about a gift.
The one sent from heaven,
That only God could give.
Don’t forget when looking under the tree,
What Christmas truly, truly means.

(Chorus)
It’s about a baby, a sweet little baby
Born in a manger on the hay.
It’s all about a baby, a sweet little baby
Born on Christmas day!

(Bridge)
So come celebrate Jesus,
Declare he is king.
Celebrate the baby.
With every song you sing.

(Chorus)
It’s about a baby, a sweet little baby
Born in a manger on the hay.
It’s all about a baby, a sweet little baby
Born on Christmas day!
Born on Christmas Day!

That is a great Christmas song. I would love to hear it sung. I have done a few about Christmas. Though a different perspective. This one is the 1st one that comes to mind. Kind of melancholy though.

"Snowman's Tears"

© 2009 Mark Cote

outside, I build a snowman
and give him the heart, no one knew
His eyes I make, day dream blue
While it's cold outside, his heart, will keep him warm
as his eyes see another Christmas without you...

as it rains, a snowman's tears
through colored lights and yule tide cheer
in my heart, I wish you were here
as carolers sing with hearts so full of joy
mine sits, a snowy forgotten toy

(chorus) Sprinkle, sprinkle snowman tears
silently falling through the years
No one knows, no one shows
what it all means...
so sprinkle to me soft, snowman tears

Silent night, means more to me
than jingle bells, or minty smells
on a warm, winter's night
a colored flash, a holiday passed
as another new year begins..

Silent snows, Angels know
is just their way to say..
silent hearts, will fall apart
without.. the love of you
(chorus)

"My Christmas Wish"
© 2012 Mark Cote

I know the depth of Silent Night
I know how Christmas can be blue
'cause while I sit 'neath the mistletoe
I think of you

We used to sing Jingle Bells
and laugh the whole night through
so with snowman's tears I will wish
Merry Christmas to you

(chorus) So Mr. Claus here is my wish for you
take these broken dreams I have
to the pole with you
maybe an elf or two can mend then right one day
and until that day
I will make it through some how
yes, until that day I will make it through some how

(instrumental)

undelivered greeting card
un-shipped presents for you
Oh Holy Night I see the light
as angels they flew

I liked the Christmas love song themes, I tend to do more traditional ones, because I work in retail and they over play the Christmas love songs until you just do'nt like them as much. lol.The snowman tears is similar to the angel tears. I like them alot. Good job.

Thank you. I'm in retail as well, and this time of year makes my ears bleed. The ones above I wrote a while ago. ( lots of melancholy in my heart then) I haven't approached a Christmas themed one recently. I would love to do a Christmas love story one though. I need to get into a frame of mind conducive to it though. Snowman's tears was partly based on an idea of the dog left outside while the family is inside enjoying things. I replaced a dog with a snowman. Then went with a different story line.

"In This Orchestra"

© 2012 Mark Cote

I love you
I hate you
I can never replace you
we're 2 strings on a guitar
a guitar of love
playing out our part
in a symphony
a symphony of life

listen to the choir
sing in harmony
doesn't sound the same to me
if we don't resonate the tones
we both play all alone

(chorus) in this orchestra
where we all play a part
in this orchestra
if we play from heart to heart
and though the words we know may never come
you're a part of me
in this orchestra

distant drums
never sound the same
to ears that hear the pain
a whisper on the wind
or a cynic's grin

and though
we've played the notes all wrong
the feeling comes along

(chorus)
(instrumental)

when
the song we play is sad
we draw from what we had
yeah...

(chorus)

Thank you. Working right now on a parody of "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town". It will be "NSA Is Coming To Town". I already have the chorus and 2 verses. Just need to make 3 more and it's done. I should have it done tonight at work. Then post for Monday and share here as well.

And here's something until then for everyone to check out. A fun pop song I wrote a while ago. The title is a word my nephew said when he was about 3 or 4. Nonsense word then in the mid-70's, but in 2010 I thought I'd turn it into a dance song.

"Shoobooty"

© 2010 Mark Cote

You've got me twistin' like chubby
Rock around the clock
Singing like Elvis
into the night
As we dance to The Drifters
just you and I
oo shoobooty, we'll have a good time

(chorus) Shake it shake it shake it shoobooty
Shake it shake it shake it shoobooty
Shake it shake it shake it shoobooty
shake it shoobooty and have a good time

Sing like a Partridge, go go boots
smooth as a wave of surfer blue
perpetual summer
just you and I
oo shoobooty, we'll have a good time
(chorus)
(instrumental)

(bridge) It's such a fab feeling what you do to me
got me footloose and fancy free
you play my heart like a piano key
Come on shoobooty and dance with me
(chorus)
